In Oregon, Colorado, Alaska, and Washington D.C. cultivation was a part of the legalization initiative. Washington’s marijuana legalization model has clearly been deficient because of this. In Washington State the possession of up to an ounce of cannabis is legal for those 21 and older, as is the state-licensed distribution of cannabis and cannabis products. However, the cultivation of any amount of cannabis for personal use remains a felony punishable by up to five years in prison.

Bipartisan legislation – House Bill 2629 – has been introduced in Washington’s House of Representatives to legalize the cultivation of up to six cannabis plants for everyone 21 and older, while allowing them to possess up to 24 ounces harvested from said plants (though anything over an ounce must remain at the residence).

This is a common sense measure that would put Washington in line with Colorado and Oregon, two other states which have legalized cannabis, and allow personal cannabis cultivation.
