Raymond Schwab, a Gulf War veteran, relocated to Colorado last April to treat his chronic pain and post-traumatic stress with medical cannabis. He never thought his decision would cost him his children.

“They’re basically using my kids as a pawn to take away freedoms I fought for,” he said. “It’s a horrible position to put me in.”

According to Schwab and his wife, Amelia, child welfare in Kansas is holding five of their six children, and they have only had three visits with them since April of last year.

“I don’t think what we’re doing is illegal, immoral or wrong,” Amelia said. This case shines a light on how different state laws regarding cannabis can be harmful.

Medical cannabis was recently rejected by Kansas Legislators. Colorado has allowed medical cannabis since 2000, and recreational cannabis since 2012.
