Poll: 68% Of Canadians Support Marijuana Legalization

Posted on March 1, 2016 at 11:10 AM Comments comments (0)

canada marijuana

During his campaign to become Canada’s Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau campaigned on a pro-marijuana platform. One of the first things that he did after getting elected was to task federal officials in Canada with the goal of implementing a legal, regulated system for recreational marijuana in Canada. The process has been slow for various reasons, but I still believe that legal marijuana is on it’s way to Canada sooner than later. That would be a move that would have overwhelming support in Canada according to a recent poll. Per The Globe and Mail:

The poll of 1,000 Canadians found that legalizing marijuana is supported or somewhat supported by 68 per cent of the population.

British Columbia leads the way with 75-per-cent overall support for legalization, while the plan has only 55-per-cent support in the Prairies.

On the other hand, 30 per cent of the population is opposed or somewhat opposed to the legalization of marijuana.

Recreational marijuana has been illegal in Canada since 1923. Canada is home to one of the best marijuana cultures on the planet. I used to consume a lot of Canadian cannabis in the 1990’s and early 2000’s. I would love to.......http://www.theweedblog.com/poll-68-of-canadians-support-marijuana-legalization/

Puerto Rico??s Governor Calls For Marijuana Legalization

Posted on March 1, 2016 at 11:05 AM Comments comments (0)

puerto rico marijuana legalization

There are a number of states in America that are pushing to legalize recreational marijuana this year. Some are doing it via citizen initiative and signature gathering, others are working to accomplish the task via legislative action. Yesterday Puerto Rico’s Governor, Alejandro Garcia Padilla, called for Puerto Rico to legalize recreational marijuana. Puerto Rico has been in the process of reforming its marijuana laws, with medical marijuana reform coming last year. Per WDTN:

Puerto Rico’s governor has called for the legalization of marijuana during his last public address as leader of the U.S. territory.

Alejandro Garcia Padilla said Monday that taking such action would lower crime and target hypocrisy. He said legislators should at a minimum approve a bill filed in 2013 that would decriminalize marijuana. Puerto Rico’s Health Department recently adopted a regulation allowing the cultivation, manufacturing and distribution of medical marijuana.

Unfortunately it sounds like the Governor is not seeking re-election, and will be replaced this November after a new Governor is elected. But still, this is a very big deal. It’s not every day that a sitting Governor comes out with such strong support for ending...............http://www.theweedblog.com/puerto-ricos-governor-calls-for-marijuana-legalization/

What Are The Best Marijuana Industry Investment Opportunities Right Now?

Posted on March 1, 2016 at 11:00 AM Comments comments (0)

marijuana money cash

Earlier today I posed a question on my Facebook page – “What do you think are the best investment areas in the cannabis industry right now?” I made sure to state ahead of time that I wasn’t talking about any particular companies, because ‘invest in this company’ blah blah blah, it gets old. I was talking about areas or sectors of the marijuana industry that present good investment opportunities. To be very clear, I am in NO WAY an investor in anything, other than retro arcade games and consumable cannabis, and even then only on a personal level (up to 8 ounces legally in Oregon!). So take my opinion for what you will.

It’s no secret that investor dollars are flooding into the marijuana industry at an ever growing pace, and there’s no end in sight. The marijuana industry is exciting and full of potential, so it’s understandable why everyone wants in. There are a lot of really, really crapping investments being made out there. Again, what do I know since I don’t have anywhere near the dollar amounts that I read about being reported in investment articles, but I know a lot about cannabis and know people that know virtually everything about cannabis, and all of them have been scratching their heads at some of the things we talk about.

I think that a lot of people invest in the wrong things because they are new to cannabis, and think that just because something works in other industries that it will automatically work in the cannabis industry. That’s not the case from what I’ve seen in the over 6 years I’ve been helping run this blog. Like I always say, marijuana is different. The consumers are different, the rules are different, societies view of the industry is different than it is for any other industry. There are so many nuances that it’s impossible to compile a list of all of them, especially since they are almost all in flux and could be............ http://www.theweedblog.com/what-are-the-best-marijuana-industry-investment-opportunities-right-now/

Bills To Decriminalize, Legalize Marijuana Introduced In Michigan Senate

Posted on March 1, 2016 at 11:00 AM Comments comments (0)

michigan marijuana

Senator Coleman Young II introduced a bill and a Resolution related to marijuana in the Michigan Senate on Feb. 24.

Senate Bill 813 would establish the “Nonmedical Marihuana Code”. It would legalize marijuana and allow possession of one ounce and 5 flowering plants per adult, plus an unlimited amount of marijuana generated from the plants, provided that stash is kept where the garden is. Out-of-state visitors are allowed one-half an ounce of flower. Hashish: 5 grams for residents, one gram for tourists.

On the positive side, the bill allows for marijuana lounges; transfer of up to one ounce and six immature plants to another without compensation; smoking and driving could result in a small fine for first and subsequent occurrences, with the possibility of suspended license;

Slightly disappointing are the provisions requiring marijuana gardens to be hidden from view by anyone and criminal protections for commercial extract makers agaist individuals making the substance for their own use. Although water- and glycerine-based extractions seem to be available to everyone, all other extraction methods are only legally performed by licensed marijuana products manufacturers- and violation is a three-year felony.

Even more disturbing is the taxation portion of the proposal. Sen. Young II’s proposal includes a $50.00 per ounce tax on marijuana flowers, a $25.00 tax per immature marijuana plant and a $15.00 per ounce tax on all other marijuana. Tax would be assessed at the time of transfer from growing center to any of the three destination locations: a lounge, a production facility or a............http://www.theweedblog.com/bills-to-decriminalize-legalize-marijuana-introduced-in-michigan-senate/

Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard Is Progressive On Marijuana Policy

Posted on March 1, 2016 at 10:55 AM Comments comments (0)

Tulsi Gabbard marijuana

I am a huge political nerd, and was long before I decided to study public policy in college. A lot of my friends are also political nerds, which comes with the territory I suppose growing up in Oregon’s capital city. Attending college with a bunch of other political nerds just added fuel to the fire in that regard. Presidential election years are particularly exciting for me and my friends. I get screen shots, tweets, and other messages on a daily basis about who said what, and people offering their opinions.

The big news over the weekend was the endorsement of Bernie Sanders by Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard. Tulsi Gabbard had to resign her position as VP of the DNC in order to make the endorsement, so it was a very significant decision on her part. The resignation and endorsement have led many to speculate that Gabbard would become Bernie’s running mate if Bernie gets the nomination. That has in turn led many to speculate what kind of Vice President Congresswoman Gabbard would make when it comes to marijuana policy if that were to occur. My good friend Anthony Johnson gave a fantastic............http://www.theweedblog.com/congresswoman-tulsi-gabbard-is-progressive-on-marijuana-policy/

Ten Pennsylvania Counties Account For 60% Of The State??s Marijuana Possession Arrests In 2015

Posted on March 1, 2016 at 10:50 AM Comments comments (0)

pennsylvania marijuana arrests

There are 67 counties in Pennsylvania, and when it comes to marijuana possession arrests, not all counties are created equal in Pennsylvania. Philadelphia decriminalized the personal possession of marijuana and saved over one million dollars in the first year, and Pittsburgh recently passed a measure to do the same. There are other municipalities in Pennsylvania that are exploring the idea of decriminalizing personal marijuana possession rather than arresting people for it. So why are some Pennsylvania counties arresting people far more than other counties while some cities are decriminalizing the same behavior?

Chris Goldstein recently published an article on Philly.Com which looked at arrest data for 2015. He found that 10 out of the 67 counties in Philadelphia accounted for 60% of the state’s marijuana possession arrests in 2015. Those counties are as follows, per Chris’ article:

1- Allegheny County with 2,191 marijuana arrests or per capita, 177 for every 100,000 residents.

2- Montgomery County with 1,550 marijuana arrests or per capita, 191 for every 100,000 residents.

3- Bucks County with 1,010 marijuana arrests or per capita, 111 for every 100,000 residents.

4- Delaware County with 976 marijuana arrests or per capita, 174 for every 100,000 residents.

5- York County with 926 marijuana arrests or per capita, 211 for every 100,000 residents.

6- Chester County with 877 marijuana arrests or per capita, 172 for every 100,000 residents.

7- Philadelphia County with 858 marijuana arrests or per capita, 54 for every 100,000 residents.

8- Dauphin County with 822 marijuana arrests or per capita, 303 for every 100,000 residents.

9- Lehigh County with 706 marijuana arrests or per capita, 199 for every 100,000 residents.

10- Berks County with 618 marijuana arrests or per capita, 149 for every 100,000 residents.

I am not from Pennsylvania, nor have I ever been there, so I don’t know what local governments and law enforcement are like compared to other government and law enforcement in other areas. But math doesn’t lie, and it looks like some counties have a...........http://www.theweedblog.com/ten-pennsylvania-counties-marijuana-possession-arrests-2015/

Setting Your End Goal ?? Total Cost Per Gram Versus Yield

Posted on March 1, 2016 at 10:45 AM Comments comments (0)

heliospectra cannabis led grow light

A main factor that must be determined – and might be the most important – is the identification of your end goal when using LED grow lights to grow cannabis. Whether I’m shooting for higher production yields or increased THC, and/or terpene content, I base my light recipes off my end goal.

As we all know, higher quality cannabis, with increased THC and terpene content, doesn’t always mean record breaking yields. And a record breaking yield doesn’t always mean the most economically feasible solution. An excellent example of these economics can be demonstrated through the HVAC requirements alone. With 1000W HPS lamps requiring approximately 6,000 BTUs of cooling per lamp (depending on room construction and other heat loads) and a 600W LED grow lights producing approximately 2,000 BTUs of heat, it is simple to see that the savings on HVAC alone easily make up for an increase in yield in a larger setup. Not to mention, a direct decrease in energy costs. This is, of course, an equation of revenue per square foot, but the bottom line, with such dramatic operational cost savings, is easy to see.

The cannabis industry has been stuck in a yield based paradigm for decades. But a maturing of the industry has been inevitable as it merges itself with the CEA (Controlled Environments Agriculture) sector, revealing the true cost of an operation. That, and the inevitable enlargement of marijuana grows is.............http://www.theweedblog.com/setting-your-end-goal-total-cost-per-gram-versus-yield/

Maryland House Votes To Expand Who Can Recommend Medical Marijuana

Posted on March 1, 2016 at 10:45 AM Comments comments (0)

medical marijuana doctor

A medical marijuana program is only as good as its ability to serve suffering patients. One issue that some states experience, especially when their medical marijuana programs are new, is getting people on board who are legally able to sign the papers to recommend that someone become a medical marijuana patient. That’s almost always just certain types of medical doctors. However, there is a growing push to expand the list of medical professionals that can fulfill that requirement to comply with state medical marijuana laws. The most recent state to move forward on this idea is Maryland, where the House approved a bill that would expand medical marijuana recommendation powers to midwives, nurses, dentists and podiatrists. Per the Washington Post:

Maryland would allow midwives, nurses, dentists and foot doctors to certify patients for medical-marijuana under a bill the state House of Delegates passed Friday.

Current state law restricts such authority to physicians, but the House voted 110 to 21 to extend it to other types of health-care providers.

The legislation, sponsored by Del. Dan K. Morhaim (D-Baltimore County), will now move to the Senate for consideration. It would allow nurse midwives, nurse practitioners, dentists and podiatrists to certify patients for medical-marijuana purchases.

One of the biggest ‘winners’ if this bill becomes law are patients in rural areas. Finding a doctor that will sign your medical marijuana paperwork in a large metro area is not that difficult in states that have medical marijuana programs. However, a compassionate doctor that sympathizes with cannabis patients, or any doctor for that matter, is non-existent in most rural parts of medical marijuana states. This bill would help a lot, especially when it comes to midwives and dentists, in rural areas. I remember when Oregon’s program first started, people would drive as far as..............http://www.theweedblog.com/maryland-house-votes-to-expand-who-can-recommend-medical-marijuana/

What Was The Top Selling Marijuana Strain In Colorado And Washington In 2015?

Posted on March 1, 2016 at 10:40 AM Comments comments (0)

What Was The Top Selling Marijuana Strain In Colorado And Washington In 2015?

A lot of marijuana was sold in 2015 in Colorado and Washington. Unlike 2014 when Colorado started rolling out legal recreational marijuana sales prior to Washington, and both states doing so in a limited capacity, 2015 saw both states selling recreational marijuana from the start of the year through the end of the year. More and more stores opened up during 2015, so that’s worth mentioning, but 2015 is the first full year of both states doing recreational sales.

A natural question that people have asked since the end of 2015 is ‘which marijuana strain was the top seller during 2015?’ According to a company that tracks marijuana strain sales in both states, both Colorado and Washington sold more Blue Dream than any other marijuana strain. Per Civilized:

Last year’s #1-selling strain in both Colorado and Washington was Blue Dream, a sativa-dominant hybrid of Blueberry indica and Haze, according to new data released by BDS Analytics.

The firm, founded nearly a year ago, gathers info about recreational and medical cannabis sales in both states, via participating dispensaries, and has a total of over 20 million transactions in its database. Founder and CEO Roy Bingham tells Civilized the popularity of Blue Dream can be attributed, in part, to savvy marketing.

“We have literally thousands of strains in our database, and Blue Dream is #1 in both Washington and Colorado,” he says. “There’s clearly marketing around individual................http://www.theweedblog.com/what-was-the-top-selling-marijuana-strain-in-colorado-and-washington-in-2015/

The History Of The Faberge Egg Body Style

Posted on March 1, 2016 at 10:40 AM Comments comments (2)

Faberge Egg Body Style cannabis marijuana glass bong

Percolators haven’t always been the central focus on water pipes, but in 2016, it’s one of the most important things a smoker can look for when selecting the right bong. Percolators use pressure differences to create diffusion, which will get you the coolest, smoothest, and most flavorful hits from your concentrates or dry herbs.

One particular percolator, the Faberge Egg percolator, has nudged its way to the top tiers in the percolatin’ world. The Faberge Egg is unique from other percolators in that its entire body shape functions as an entire diffusion machine. Living up to its name, the Faberge Egg — or Fab Egg for short — is shaped like an egg and uses several holes in its glass body to force the smoke and water to mix together and bounce and diffuse off its unusual surface area. The Fab Egg was originally sold as a dab rig for its amazing diffusion and flavor enhancing capabilities. Smokers made video reviews of it, wrote articles about it, and drooled over it from the counters of their local headshops. Everyone wanted one, and even still the Fab Egg stands out as one of the most desirable designs in functional glass. So where did these things come from, if not out of thin air? Bear with me, and let’s take a quick jump back to late 19th and early 20th century Russia.

The name “Faberge Egg” comes from the jeweled and heavily decorated Easter gifts that were sent by the artist Peter Carl Faberge and his company to the Russian Tsars Alexander III and Nicholas II and their family. Faberge created an entire line of.......http://www.theweedblog.com/the-history-of-the-faberge-egg-body-style/

Marijuana And The Brain: OHSU Brain Awareness Lecture

Posted on March 1, 2016 at 10:30 AM Comments comments (1)

vivian mcpeak

I have always admired Vivian McPeak’s activism. When I moved into my current house, the couple that lives across the street found out about me co-running this blog, and asked me if I had ever heard of Vivian McPeak. I remember saying something to the effect of, ‘um, duh, he’s one of my heroes!’ I have never met Vivian, but I have seen him fight for freedom from afar since well before I co-founded this blog in 2010. I could go on and on about his work, but instead I suggest Googling his name, or looking for him on YouTube. He’s amazing.

Vivian has fallen on some hard times due to health issues, and a crowdfunding effort has been started in order to help cover some of his health expenses. Please, from the bottom of my heart, if you are able to donate please do so. Below is more information about the effort, via the GoFundMe page:

I am trying to raise enough resources to cover the testing, medications, and treatment I will need to take care of some chronic health challenges I’ve been battling for some time. This dollar amount includes fixing my teeth which are a component in my health condition. Anyone is free to contact me personally for a comprehensive report and for updates along the way. I will be using Facebook posts to talk about my status, and giving reports along the way. Please only give if you are able to, and don’t give a penny more than you can afford to. Please don’t feel bad if you can’t make a contribution........http://www.theweedblog.com/support-the-vivian-mcpeak-healthcare-fund/
