Formal complaints have been filed in federal court against the Michigan State Police Crime Laboratory by criminal defense attorneys who want an independent investigation into the lab’s practices and policies. A series of emails, revealed by FOIA request, illuminate the lab’s “abhorrent and illegal” compromise of scientific method to alter test results from marijuana products in a way that favors prosecutors- changes that were initiated by state drug task forces and the Prosecuting Attorneys Association of Michigan.

“Our formal letter of complaint is intended to launch a serious and objective review of practices of the Crime Lab by the National Institute of Justice,” said Neil Rockind of Southfield, Michigan’s Rockind Law in a press release jointly issued with Michael Komorn of Southfield’s Komorn Law.

The letter was filed with the Director of the National Institute of Justice, Office of Investigative and Forensic Sciences in Washington, D.C. It specifically cites “negligence and incompetence resulting in Crime Lab findings, integrity and reliability that are in serious doubt,” the press release revealed.

When New York legalized medical marijuana roughly 1.5 years ago, it was very exciting. New York has one of the largest populations in the country, and there are no doubt a huge number of people that would benefit from medical marijuana. I remember having so much hope at that time.

Eighteen years after Alaskans technically gained the right to use medical marijuana, there are still no state-licensed dispensaries and there are only six qualifying illnesses for MMJ use, according to NORML.

A judge on Tuesday dismissed a lawsuit that sought federal approval for a credit union aimed at serving Colorado's marijuana businesses, saying pot is still illegal under federal law.

Fourth Corner Credit Union challenged a decision by the U.S. Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City to keep the pot bank from accessing the nation's financial system. The credit union, which was chartered by Colorado in 2014, is not allowed to take deposits or issue credit - leaving many marijuana businesses operating on a cash-only basis and causing concerns over the possibility of robberies.

Marijuana reform supporters in Canada and around the world were absolutely ecstatic when Justin Trudeau won in Canada’s last election. Trudeau campaigned on a pro-marijuana legalization platform, and stated multiple times that he would start working on marijuana legalization as soon as he took office as Prime Minister of Canada. Tomorrow New York’s medical marijuana program starts serving patients with safe, legal access. It’s a bittersweet thing, because while safe access is obviously better than no access, access to limited forms of medicine isn’t good for patients. new approach missouri medical marijuanaNew Approach Missouri is trying to legalize medical marijuana this year. The medical marijuana initiative was approved for circulation today. From what I’m told by Missouri activists, the polling results for the initiative are really good, and there is strong funding from within the state. It’s tough to say how much national funding support there will be (hopefully a lot), but I really think that Missouri has a great shot of legalizing medical marijuana. The State of Oregon (where I have lived all my life) started accepting recreational marijuana business applications on Monday. It was a bit of a bumpy start due to some inclement weather in the Willamette Valley area where the Oregon Liquor Control Commission (OLCC) headquarters is located. The OLCC was hoping to have a call center staffed for opening day to help answer questions about the applications and the application process. But due to snow and ice, the office was closed Monday.

But the office closure didn’t stop people from turning in their applications. It was estimated that the State of Oregon would receive about 800 applications total. I have long admired Canadian marijuana activists. I have only been to Canada as a child, well before I was a marijuana consumer and activist.
