Robert L. Dear Jr. is a monster. Mr. Dear was the individual that recently shot up a Planned Parenthood in Colorado, killing three people and wounding 9 others. A proposed initiative to regulate marijuana like alcohol in Massachusetts is poised for the November 2016 ballot after proponents submitted their final petition signatures to the Secretary of the Commonwealth on Tuesday.

The Campaign to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol submitted more than 103,000 total signatures, and 64,750 valid signatures of registered state voters are required to qualify for the November 2016 ballot. The Secretary of the Commonwealth is expected to validate the signatures by mid-December, at which time the petition will be transmitted to the Massachusetts Legislature. If the legislature does not adopt the measure, initiative backers must collect 10,792 additional signatures in June 2016 to place the initiative on the November 2016 ballot.

Statistically speaking, senior citizens are the most likely demographic to oppose marijuana reform. That’s a big problem when you also consider the fact that senior citizens vote at a higher rate than anyone else. Whenever I look at polling for certain campaign efforts, I always look at the senior citizen polling first. I just got done watching a new medical marijuana ad from the Show-Me Cannabis campaign. It’s very well done. One of the most effective things that I have seen when it comes to changing minds about marijuana is putting a face to prohibition. It’s much easier to not like something or oppose something when you think that it doesn’t have anything to do with people you know. But when prohibition is personalized, and people fully learn how those that they admire and care for have been harmed by prohibition…that’s very powerful stuff.

The national marijuana movement has some established personalities and Conference regulars, but more and more of those personalities are Michigan residents.

The Drug Policy Alliance (DPA) conference in Washington, D.C. saw a broad contingent of Michigan speakers and attendees- and will again; a recent conference in Las Vegas had at least one Michigander on the microphone; and it’s been a busy year for one of our community’s brightest couples.

DPA’s conference is a major annual event. This year a large number of activists from Michigan made their presence felt, both as medical marijuana patients and legalization advocates. MILegalize had Board members Matt Abel, Josey Scoggin, Chuck Ream, Michael Tuffelmire and Nick Zettell on the ground and representing the grass-roots effort to legalize marijuana in Michigan. Brenda Scoggin and Dakota Serna were in attendance, too.

In 2014, New York City gave officers the discretion to issue those caught with less than 25 grams of marijuana a summons to appear, rather than arrest them. Officers can still arrest people if they are in possession of less than 25 grams of marijuana in New York City ”if the marijuana is burning, if the type of possession indicates intent to sell, if the individual has an outstanding warrant, or if the individual is in a location with special consideration, like a school.” When you compare the year-to-date marijuana arrest statistics to those from the same time last year, marijuana arrests are down significantly in New York City. read several articles today that made it sound like California is a total slam dunk to legalize marijuana in 2016. The word ‘inevitable’ was found throughout the articles. Does California have a good chance of legalizing in 2016? Absolutely. Is it inevitable? Not by a long shot.

There is still a ton of work to be done in California if any of the current initiative efforts are to even make the 2016 ballot. Hundreds of thousands of signatures are required to get a marijuana legalization initiative on the ballot, and those signatures aren’t going to gather themselves. It will take a small army of people to do it, and they will have to gather significantly more than the required amount to calculate for ones that will be deemed invalid for various reasons.

Then, only after ballot access is achieved, does the next phase of the campaign begin, which involves promoting the initiative and convincing voters to vote for it. California will be one of the hardest states to do that in two ways. It wasn’t that long ago that thousands of people were arrested for marijuana annually in Washington D.C.. 2,346 people were arrested for marijuana in Washington D.C. in 2011. Washington D.C. voters approved marijuana legalization during the 2014 Election. As a result, marijuana arrests in D.C. are down. Way down. The DEA has been trying to eradicate marijuana plants across the country for a long time, without success. I live in Oregon, which voted to legalize marijuana in 2014. Yet, despite marijuana’s current legal status in Oregon, the DEA still spends tax payer dollars eradicating marijuana plants, up to $60 per plant. That is an obvious waste of tax money that could be going towards better things, which is something that 12 members of Congress agree with. Per the Washington Post:
