The Latest: Maine Alcohol Bureau to Have Marijuana Oversight

The Latest on the first day of legalized marijuana in Maine (all times local):

Maine Gov. Paul LePage says he’s using an executive order to shift oversight of licensing and enforcement relating to legal marijuana.

LePage sparred with state lawmakers about who should have authority over marijuana sales in Maine. He gave the authority to the Bureau of Alcoholic Beverages and Lottery Operations on Monday.

The order is an outgrowth of a row LePage had with lawmakers last week about his desire to move oversight from the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry to the Bureau of Alcoholic Beverages and Lottery Operations.

The Republican governor says the alcoholic beverages bureau has expertise in managing retail sales, licensing and enforcement, and thus should have oversight.

Medical marijuana is moving along quickly in Ireland, but not quick enough for the national legislature. Lawmakers want legal cannabis in sick peoples’ hands “as soon as possible”—and they want the government to pick up the tab.

Multiple families have left Ireland for America in the past few years in order to access cannabis products like high CBD oil. This City Hall Has a Skunky Weed Air Pollution Problem

When a Portsmouth, New Hampshire detective observed the persistent smell of fresh pot coming from a home in the neighborhood, he rounded up his troops and raided a grow site, where they found and seized 51 plants.

The police then stashed the “contraband” in their evidence room, which is in the same building as Portsmouth City Hall.

Now, everyone in or near City Hall can smell the weed plants, and they don’t care for the aroma. Many are saying the smell is so strong that it’s making them sick.

As it turns out, there is a ventilation problem in the cops’ evidence room.

Police Can Keep Cannabis in Colorado

The Colorado Supreme Court recently ruled that police cannot return cannabis to defendants, even innocent ones.

According to The Denver Post, this is because doing so would technically make the police distributors of cannabis, which is a conflict of interest and illegal. This decision was in response to one by the Colorado Court of Appeals, which ruled that police officers had to return cannabis if the defendant was found not guilty. This ruling overturns that decision, allowing officers to keep the herb.

In light of the Chinese New Year this weekend, we wanted to celebrate properly and in style! Noodles represent happiness, luck and longevity for the Chinese culture. So, what better time to eat noodles than during the Chinese New Year? Enter Canna-Chow Mein! We’ve cannabisized the most delicious and easy chow mein recipe just for you! Enjoy with friends and loved ones!

Ingredients (Serves 6)

1 lb egg noodle spaghetti or Chinese chow mein noodles

1 1/2 cup chopped green beans

1/4 cup cannabis- infused vegetable oil*

1 medium onion, thinly sliced

1 garlic clove, crushed

1/2 cup celery, julienne sliced

1/2 cup carrot, julienne sliced

1/2 cup fresh sprouts

1 cup finely shredded chicken meat or tofu cubes

2 tablespoons soy sauce / tamari / Braggs

1 teaspoon sugar

1 tablespoon rice wine

1 1/2 tablespoons canna butter*

3 tablespoons chicken or vegetable stock

1/2 chicken or vegetable bouillon cube, crumbled

Directions

Cook noodles in boiling salted water until they are just tender. Drain the noodles and keep hot. Cook the green beans in boiling water for 5 minutes. Drain and keep hot.

It has long been one of the standing arguments of the legalization movement that fewer restrictions on cannabis also means less criminal activity, and by association, safer streets and cities. It seems that in Canada, this prediction is becoming a reality. According to a recent article in The Globe and Mail, a new report from Statistics Canada shows that cartel crime in Victoria over the past two years has been way down when it comes to cannabis. Only 39 percent of cannabis trafficking crimes had to do with organized criminals, and only six percent of cannabis production cases could be linked to organized criminals.

Organized criminal activity is still a major issue in Canada for other drugs, but it appears that when it comes to cannabis, the data is pretty conclusive. Since Canada will introduce legislation that will legalize recreational cannabis this year, this is welcome news indeed. Still, to those on the inside of the industry, it does not come as news at all.

“To people who know how this industry has taken shape in many parts of [B.C.], this wouldn’t be news and, if anything, it would still amount to an over-emphasis on the extent of the organized criminal involvement,” Professor Neil Boyd, a drug prohibition scholar, told The Globe and Mail.
