Around a year ago, it was announced that the Canadian government planned to legalize cannabis in Canada. Last week, the Canadian government, under Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, unveiled its plans to do so.

The Cannabis Act is an act that was introduced to Canadian Parliament in 2017 that would legalize cannabis in Canada. It is a milestone in the legal history of cannabis in Canada, alongside the 1923 prohibition.

Should the Cannabis Act pass in Canadian Parliament, this country would become the second nation in the world, after Uruguay, to regulate a legal marijuana market. While this feels like a long time coming, as it was one of Trudeau’s biggest endorsements while he was campaigning for office, it is definitely exciting to see it begin to come to fruition.

Cannabis needs a new taxonomy. Strain names are detrimental to the progress of the cannabis industry. Let’s dig in to this issue by looking at the story of a woman, who we will call Lydia:

At 49, Lydia has finally succumbed to the suggestions of her family, and decided to try cannabis to manage her chronic back pain. She has avoided cannabis ever since having a terrible experience with it in college, but believes her family when they say that cannabis medicine has evolved. Given the vast variety of products these days, the right strain is out there, somewhere.

After getting a recommendation from her doctor, Lydia visits the dispensary closest to her home. The space is clean, the staff is helpful, and she leaves with a flower product, “Blank Check,” that she is hopeful will overcome her typical trouble falling asleep.

She gets lucky!

She falls asleep before midnight for the first time in a decade, and returns to the dispensary just before she runs out of her medicine.

Following a successful 2016 tour around the U.S., the group behind The 2017 Hemp Road Trip are trying to raise funds – so they can raise awareness about the power of hemp across the country.

“The number one myth is that hemp is a drug like marijuana – that it gets you high,” says Rick Trojan. How much marijuana has been grown in Washington? Over 150,000 pounds of useable marijuana produced in fiscal year 2017 under Washington’s Legal System. Washington’s legal marijuana market is booming, which is resulting in a lot of cannabis being grown.

According to the Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board, there has been 363,268 pounds (lbs) of marijuana harvested in fiscal year (FY) 2017, which began on July 1, 2016 and ends on June 30. Of this harvested marijuana, 155,494 lbs is considered “useable”, which is what is sold at marijuana retail outlets.

Canadian Cannabis ConsumersStaying physically active while consuming cannabis whether hiking, exercising or engaging in sports is a practice that’s becoming increasingly more popular in North America. But Canadian cannabis consumers said they are more physically active than Americans who consume cannabis, according to a new survey conducted by PSB Research and Civilized.

The United States is the eighth fattest nation on earth, but cannabis is not likely a factor. About one-third of cannabis consumers in North America stayed active one way or another, researchers found. “The survey found that cannabis users tend to be slightly more active while under the influence of cannabis, whether playing games (37 percent Canada, 32 percent U.S.), exploring the great outdoors (32 percent Canada, 25 percent U.S.) or working out (16 percent Canada, 12 percent U.S.). Paying tribute to a common slang phrase, Americans are more likely to ‘Netflix and chill’ (62 percent U.S., 57 percent Canada) while consuming,” researchers stated in a press release.

It’s taken the nation over three years to make access to legal cannabis a reality, however this July, pharmacies throughout Uruguay will begin dispensing cannabis.

Over his career, Tucker played for the Texas Rangers and signed into a minor league contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers. However, four surgeries later, Tucker was only 26 years old and left with little options. A torn labrum in his shoulder and a torn torn quad in his knee prevented him from playing on the field. Medical CannabisA federal judge in Chicago has overturned a law barring medical cannabis companies from contributing to political candidates and campaigns in the state of Illinois. Judge John Z. Lee who ruled on the three-and-a-half-year-old statute stated that, “by singling out medical cannabis organizations, (the law) appears to reflect precisely such a content or viewpoint preference,” and added that this law is in violation of the First Amendment.

This case stems from a 2015 lawsuit in which Libertarian Party members Claire Ball and Scott Schluter tried to secure campaign donations from the medical cannabis industry, but were thwarted by the Medical Cannabis Pilot Program, which was enacted in 2013.
