CBD Infused Chewing Gum Being Tested on IBS Patients

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) affects between 25 and 45 million people in the United States. Doctors are now conducting a study to see if cannabis-infused gum can help people suffering from the ailment.

IBS is a disorder characterized by abdominal pain or discomfort and altered bowel habit. Doctors have been unable to effectively treat IBS, but a group of doctors at Wageningen University in the Netherlands claims that CBD, the non-psychoactive component of cannabis, could help alleviate the colon spasms that appear to be the root of the symptoms.

They will begin a clinical trial next month, testing cannabis-laced gum manufactured at the U.S. firm Medical Marijuana Inc. It will specifically test CanChew, a new product created by AXIM Biotechnologies.

Obama Frees Cannabis Prisoner on His Last Day in Office

The White House announced Thursday that former President Barack Obama granted clemency to pot prisoner Ricardo Montes as one of his final acts in the oval office. Thirty-six-year-old Montes had served nine years of his 20-year sentence for illegal cannabis distribution and conducting a criminal enterprise. January 19 was Obama’s last chance to use executive power to free convicted federal prisoners.

Montes and his friend Luke Scarmazzo opened an illegal collective, the California Healthcare Collective, in Modesto, California. At the peak of their business enterprise, the two friends were raking in $13,000 per month. Over the course of the time period between 2005 and 2007, the two young men were responsible for up to $9 million in transactions. Both were convicted with mandatory minimum sentences. Following the case, two of the jurors wrote letters suggesting leniency following the harsh arraignment.

New Jersey-based attorney Georgean Arsons handled both Montes’ and Scarmazzo’s clemency appeals. “I’m just ecstatic for him, so happy. He has three children waiting for him,” told the Sacramento Bee. “I believe he is completely deserving. With all of the changes to marijuana charging practices, he would not be charged today if he was doing the same thing.”

Legal Cannabis in Germany is Covered by Insurance

In a move many global legalization advocates consider more momentous than the ascension of Donald Trump to the White House, the German parliament unanimously approved the legalization of cannabis for medical use on January 19.

Further, in a decision that places Germany at the forefront of countries integrating cannabis into mainstream healthcare, parliament also voted to cover the same under health insurance for chronically ill patients.

The law is expected to go into full force in March 2017.

Unlike the United States, Germany has now created a path to cannabinoid treatment that will effectively make the drug free, if not ultra-low cost for patients suffering from chronic conditions no other drugs can treat effectively.

Henderson, Nevada Enacts Temporary Ban on Recreational Cannabis

The Henderson City Council is one step closer to temporarily prohibiting all recreational cannabis activities for almost a year. The proposed ordinance will give officials the necessary time they need to put into place regulations for the future market.

“Mayor (Andy) Hafen and the council want to make sure they have the time needed to review the regulations being developed by the state of Nevada and any changes made by the Nevada Legislature before making any determinations related to the licensing, operation and location of recreational marijuana businesses in Henderson,” city spokesman David Cherry said.

If passed, council members will use the temporary ban on retail cannabis businesses in order to set out regulations for licensing, operation and the application of various requirements. Veteran Advocates for Medical Cannabis in Indiana

Fifty-one-year-old Jeff Staker is a retired marine who spent 11 years as a sniper, served in operation Desert Storm and operation Desert Shield. Now he’s fighting a different kind of war for medical cannabis, and he’s gaining quite a reputation among legislators.

Indiana is not a state that has had much progress for medical cannabis patients. In fact, a medical cannabis bill hasn’t even made it to a committee hearing in the Indiana legislature for six years. Last year, a small movement was made for cannabis with the national American Legion, whose headquarters is located in Indianapolis, when the group petitioned congress to remove cannabis from the Schedule I substance list.

The HIA Challenges the DEA�??s Recent CBD Code 0

The HIA has filed a petition for a review of the DEA’s recent internal changes which gave a specific code to CBD and CBD-derived products.

Back in December we wrote about a statement issued by the DEA that said that under “Final Rule—Establishment of a New Drug Code for Marihuana Extract” that a specific code for CBD and products containing cannabinoid would be established. This move immediately triggered confusion and uncertainty in the hemp industry.

Now the Hemp Industries Association, along with other companies, have officially filled a petition for review of this change. The petitioners are seeking clear judicial answers to the possible implications of this type of change. Americans and Canadians Spent $53.3 Billion on Weed Last Year

U.S. and Canadian weed consumers plopped down $53.3 billion for legal and illegal marijuana in 2016, according to a new report from Arcview Market Research. However, the vast majority of those transactions took place on the black market.

Still, this is more money than Americans spent at McDonald’s and Starbucks combined, according to QSR Magazine.

Arcview’s 22-page executive summary for the “State of Legal Marijuana Markets” estimated that the black market still accounts for 87 percent of marijuana sales, down 90 percent in 2015.

The North American legal weed market posted $6.9 billion in revenue in 2016 alone, a 30 percent increase from the year before—meaning that it’s growing as fast as broadband internet grew in the 2000s, according to the Pew Research Center.

But, still, it sounds like quite a bit of revenue is going into the illegal market.

Obama became the president to have granted more commutations than any other when he announced Tuesday that Manning will be freed in May, almost 30 years ahead of schedule. Manning, the transgender Army intelligence analyst who leaked more than 700,000 U.S. documents, was one of 273 people receiving clemency on a single day.

Sheriff Accused of Meth Theft Pleads to Felony, Resigns

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — A newly elected West Virginia sheriff who admitted he was a meth addict and was charged with stealing the drug from a police locker pleaded guilty to a felony and resigned from office Wednesday, a prosecutor said.

Bo Williams entered the plea to a charge of entering without breaking Wednesday in Roane County Circuit Court.

County Prosecutor Josh Downey said Williams was accused of taking methamphetamine from the storage area when he was a Spencer police officer last fall. He resigned in December, a month after being elected sheriff. He took office this month.

According to a criminal complaint, meth was found in Williams’ desk and police vehicle. The complaint said several evidence bags found with Williams contained case numbers corresponding to missing evidence.

Downey said Williams told him, Spencer Police Chief Greg Nichols and a state police sergeant last November that he had been addicted to meth for more than a year. Downey said Williams admitted removing methamphetamine from a police case file and consuming it.
