Kentucky’s latest cannabis bill proposal would legalize both medical and recreational cannabis, killing two birds with one stone. Senator Perry Clark (D-Louisville) recently filed the Cannabis Freedom Act which would regulate the sale of cannabis similar to alcohol.

Late last night I received an e-mail from Tom Angell (who by the way doesn’t seem to sleep!) regarding the federal omnibus spending bill. The spending bill includes riders pertaining to marijuana. Some of the provisions include (provided by Tom and Marijuana Majority):

* Prevent the Department of Justice and the Drug Enforcement Administration from spending money to interfere with the implementation of state medical marijuana laws. (Similar language was included in the FY 2015 budget and is current law.)

* Prevent the Department of Justice and the Drug Enforcement Administration from spending money to interfere with the implementation of state industrial hemp research programs. (Similar language was included in the FY 2015 budget and is current law.)

The omnibus spending bill is expected to pass, which would obviously be good from the standpoint of preventing federal interference with medical marijuana and hemp. Unfortunately the riders don’t go far enough. There are no provisions for fixing the Department of Veterans Affairs prohibition its doctors talking about medical marijuana with patients, even when they know that it will help the patients. San Francisco's Examiner reports Dec. 14 that city authorities, in anticipation that California voters will legalize recreational cannabis use next year, are assembling a body to propose regulations for the industry. The newly created entity will be called the Cannabis State Legalization Task Force. The body will advise the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. Utah legalized medical marijuana in 2014. Well, sort of. Like many other states, Utah passed a ‘CBD-only’ medical marijuana bill. That means that patients aren’t allowed to consume whole-plant medical marijuana, nor can they grow it. For that matter, there’s no way for the patients to even legally buy CBD-only medical marijuana. Instead, patients have to break federal interstate drug trafficking laws to travel to state that has actual, real medical marijuana laws on the books, then smuggle the medicine back to Utah. That’s not true medical marijuana in my book.

There have been rumblings in Utah, with some bills introduced or talked about here and there to improve the medical marijuana law in Utah. Such a move would be supported by a sizable majority of Utah residents according to a new poll. Per Utah Policy:

Most Utahns favor legalizing medical marijuana prescribed by licensed doctors, a new UtahPolicy poll finds.

Some other states have allowed for the use of marijuana – in some form or another – to help ill patients, most often to alleviate the side effects of cancer chemotherapy.

Pollster Dan Jones & Associates finds in a new survey that 61 percent of Utahns favor legalizing medical marijuana.

Thirty-six percent oppose such legalization while only 2 percent don’t know.

DEA head Chuck Rosenberg made some very insensitive comments about medical marijuana recently, calling medical marijuana ‘a joke.’ That led to the Marijuana Majority starting a petition calling for the Obama Administration to fire Chuck Rosenberg. Back in March, three United States Senators introduced a bipartisan medical marijuana bill (Cory Booker (D-NJ), Rand Paul (R-KY), and Kristen Gillibrand (D-NY) that would dramatically change the way the federal government approaches medical marijuana (CARERS Act). The legislation would effectively leave medical marijuana policy up to the states to decide. The bill had bipartisan support at the time it was introduced, and has since added on several more sponsors to the legislation.

I attended college from the age of 24-28. I was a ‘non-traditional student’ as the faculty always reminded me, which always seemed like a passive aggressive form of age discrimination. It was bad enough that I couldn’t relate to most of my classmates because they had barely moved out of their parents house and didn’t have the life experience that I had accumulated up to that point. But college was still a very fun time.

In every class I was in, I would always try to steer the class conversations towards marijuana in anyway that I could. I graduated in 2009, which of course was a different time from a marijuana world perspective. Zoom forward to today, and there are now multiple states that have legalized recreational marijuana, with hopefully many more on the way. There are more medical marijuana states compared to back then too.

These changes in marijuana policy have had a sort of butterfly effect on American college campuses. More and more universities are offering.............
