It seems like every time I get on social media these days there is another celebrity coming out with their own marijuana strain. Tommy Chong was the first that I heard of, entering into an agreement with a marijuana store in Pueblo, Colorado which involved them using Tommy Chong’s name for products, including his own marijuana strain. The next that I heard about was Bob Marley (rest in peace). Then it was Willie Nelson with ‘Willie’s Reserve.’ And most recently it was Snoop Dogg and now Rihanna.

These celebrity strains are a no-brainer for the most part. All of these names are well known and revered in the marijuana community. Celebrity endorsements are not new, and since they work in other industries, why not try them with marijuana? If Michael Jordan can sells sneakers and Gatorade, than celebrities should also be able to sell marijuana too, right?

Like I always say, marijuana is different. Just because something works in other industries does not mean that it will work in the marijuana industry. This is due to the fact that consumer habits and desires in the marijuana community are different than they are in most other industries. After all, sneakers and Gatorade weren’t prohibited for several decades, and Michael Jordan wasn’t considered to be a criminal in the eyes of the law when he wore sneakers or used Gatorade. DEA head Chuck Rosenberg recently made some insensitive, unscientific comments about medical marijuana that demonstrated just how little compassion he has for suffering patients in this country. Below are Chuck Rosenberg’s comments, via the Huffington Post:

“What really bothers me is the notion that marijuana is also medicinal — because it’s not,” Rosenberg told reporters last week. “We can have an intellectually honest debate about whether we should legalize something that is bad and dangerous, but don’t call it medicine — that is a joke.

“There are pieces of marijuana — extracts or constituents or component parts — that have great promise,” he continued. “But if you talk about smoking the leaf of marijuana, which is what people are talking about when they talk about medicinal marijuana, it has never been shown to be safe or effective as medicine.”

In reaction to those comments, the Marijuana Majority created a petition calling for the termination of Chuck Rosenberg. Below is the language of the petition (which can be signed at this link here):

Chuck Rosenberg, acting head of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), just made highly offensive comments calling medical marijuana a “joke.”

While it’s nothing new for drug war bureaucrats to oppose sensible marijuana policies, Rosenberg’s comments go way too far.

The 2015 Election in Canada was a very big victory for marijuana reform. No, marijuana reform itself was not on the ballot, but when Justin Trudeau was elected it dramatically increased the chances that Canada will legalize marijuana sooner than later. I have spent the last day and a half in Las Vegas with my buddy Kaliko and Jay Smoker. There are several marijuana industry events taking place in Las Vegas this week. Marijuana monopolization was soundly rejected by the voters of Ohio on Tuesday.

Some will argue that this is a defeat and a setback for marijuana legalization, but they’re wrong. In a weird way, this is a victory for marijuana legalization in general and the marijuana legalization movement in particular.

With over three-fourths of the votes counted, major news organizations were projecting defeat of State Issue 3 in Ohio, with votes running nearly 2:1 against it. By that time, ResponsibleOhio was losing the vote in every single county, with all but one reporting partial returns. They weren’t winning anywhere in the state.

After months of pressure from patients and advocates, Gov. Cuomo signed a bill today that will expedite access to medical marijuana for critically ill patients. In June, with overwhelming bipartisan support, both houses of the legislature passed A.7060 (Gottfried) / S.5086 (Griffo), directing the state to establish a program to help critically ill patients obtain emergency access to medical marijuana as soon as possible. The bill was delivered to Governor on October 30th, and he had until today to either sign or veto the bill. The bill instructs the state to issue patient cards to qualified, critically ill patients as soon as possible, making it clear that they are medical marijuana patients and affording them some protection from law enforcement and child protective services.

Yesterday, patients, families, and advocates rallied outside Governor Cuomo’s Manhattan office to urge the governor to sign the bill. People living with HIV/AIDS and community organizing groups like VOCAL NY and ACT UP stood in solidarity with those advocating for emergency access outside the Governor’s Office, recalling a time when they were also denied access to life-saving medications.

“I am so very relieved that Governor Cuomo has signed this bill,” said Missy Miller of Atlantic Beach, whose son Oliver suffers from life-threatening seizures. “I once again have hope that I will be able to offer my son the chance at significant relief. This gives Oliver and the truly sickest patients across NY the opportunity to get access to medical marijuana expeditiously, thereby relieving suffering. This has been an incredibly long and difficult process, but I have renewed faith in my home state. Merrimack County Superior Court will hold a hearing at noon on Thursday on a lawsuit against New Hampshire Commissioner of Health and Human Services Nicholas Toumpas filed by a terminal cancer patient seeking access to medical marijuana.
