Late last year the City of Philadelphia decriminalized marijuana possession. Prior to that marijuana possession was a crime, which was punishable by an arrest, a criminal charge, and a fine. The total estimated cost for each arrest was $1,266 according to the RAND Corporation. Now getting caught with a personal amount of marijuana in Philadelphia only results in a $25 fine. The cost of issuing that fine is $20. It’s not as good as legalization, but it’s a public policy move that has already saved the City of Philadelphia over one million dollars.

The City of Pittsburgh must have noticed those savings, because tomorrow the Pittsburgh City Council is going to hold a public hearing on marijuana decriminalization. Per the Pittsburgh City Paper:

Kevin Sabet always acts like if someone consumes marijuana, in any way, in any amount, then that person is an addict and needs rehab. That’s a point that many prohibitionists make. Marijuana has been proven to be tremendously effective when it comes to treating epilepsy. The MILegalize Board of Directors is announcing a short-term extension of its 2015 petitioning campaign. All petitioners are encouraged to turn in all petitions by Dec. 21st, and to continue petitioning beyond Dec. 21st until further notice from the campaign. MILegalize is still paying petitioners for signatures collected beyond December 21st under current payment arrangements. The campaign directs petitioners to immediately contact the campaign to send in carefully completed, signed and dated petitions to the Lansing headquarters, and urges supporters not to resign the petition a second time.

“For a variety of strategic reasons, MILegalize is extending it’s campaign,” said MILegalize Chair Jeffrey Hank, a Lansing attorney. To avoid any potential challenges to the petition, MILegalize needs time to validate all the incoming petitions from volunteers between Dec. 21st and the New Year. “We don’t want any supporter to be disenfranchised because their petition was not received by us prior to submission to the State. MILegalize has until June 1, 2016 to submit our petition for the November ballot. We are aware of the problems recently experienced by the prevailing wage petition, and are carefully validating every one of our signatures,” said Hank.

Nearly one out of two tourists visiting to Colorado acknowledge that their decision is motivated by the state’s permissive attitude toward marijuana, according to the findings of a just-released study commissioned by the Colorado Tourism Office.

Among Colorado vacationers surveyed, 49 percent said that cannabis’ legal status influenced their decision, with 22 percent of them saying that it was “extremely influential.”

A record number of tourists visited the state in 2014. Recreational sales of cannabis to adults became legal in Colorado on January 1, 2014.

The nation’s largest marijuana policy organization upgraded Jeb Bush from a “D” to a “C-” in its 2016 presidential candidate report card on Friday following a radio interview in which the former Florida governor expressed support for decriminalizing marijuana.
