Former US Rep Mike Ward And ??Legalize Kentucky Now?? Seek To Reform Kentucky??s Marijuana Laws

legalize kentucky now marijuana cannabis

People have been fighting for marijuana reform in Kentucky for a long time. The Southeastern part of the United States does not have any medical marijuana states or recreational marijuana states. A new organization was launched today to try to change that. The organization is called ‘Legalize Kentucky Now’ and is lead by former United States Representative Mike Ward. Per The Courier-Journal:

Former U.S. Rep. Mike Ward is trying to bring mainstream credibility to the effort to legalize medical marijuana in Kentucky.

He announced Monday that he is the president and CEO of Legalize Kentucky Now, a nonprofit that will push for Kentucky to become the 24th state overall and the first in the southeast to make pot available with a doctor’s prescription.

“It’s time,” he said. “This is absolutely something that is going to happen in this country and this state.”

Mike Ward became a supporter of medical marijuana after watching it help alleviate his brother’s suffering and helped his brother’s appetite when he was fighting AIDS in the 1990’s. The media reports from today stated that the organization Legalize Kentucky Now would be pushing for a medical marijuana bill in the Kentucky Legislature, but the Legalize Kentucky Now website states that........http://www.theweedblog.com/us-rep-mike-ward-legalize-kentucky-now-reform-kentuckys-marijuana-laws/

Today: People Can Start Applying For Oregon Recreational Marijuana Business Licenses

Posted on January 5, 2016 at 11:35 AM Comments comments (0)

Oregon voters approved marijuana legalization during the 2014 Election. The Oregon Legislature allowed licensed medical marijuana dispensaries to start limited sales in October 2015. Only seeds, clones, and flower were allowed to be sold. Sales were tax free until today. A temporary 25% tax begins today.

As an avid marijuana consumer, I can’t wait until recreational marijuana stores open, and I can go in with my ID and purchase not only flower, but also edibles, consumables, and concentrates. That is expected to happen later this year. But before that can happen, businesses need to get licenses for everything from stores to gardens to testing laboratories and.........http://www.theweedblog.com/today-start-applying-for-oregon-recreational-marijuana-business-licenses/

What Will Happen In The Marijuana World In 2016?

2016 marijuana

2016 Will Be A Very Big Year For Cannabis

Since the end of the 2012 election, all eyes from the marijuana reform movement and industry have been set on 2016. Campaigns held off on 2014 efforts to ‘wait for 2016.’ People in the industry anticipating big victories on Election Day 2016 have said the words ‘imagine what it will be like by the end of 2016’ so many times I’d imagine they have lost track. And here we are. January 1, 2016. This is the first day of the biggest year in the history of marijuana in America, and beyond.

While I was hanging out with people during the holidays, we discussed what 2016 may have in store for the marijuana world. We all agreed that it will no doubt be a historic year, but we had varying opinions on what may happen, what is likely to happen, and what is probably a bit too bold for right now. But with that last one, we all still agreed that 2016 has the potential to see just about anything happen, so while something may seem far fetched at the beginning of 2016, by the end of 2016 it could very well have become.............http://www.theweedblog.com/what-will-happen-in-the-marijuana-world-in-2016/

15 Best Edibles of 2015

Posted on January 4, 2016 at 1:45 PM Comments comments (2)

While the cannabis edibles industry continued to grow by leaps and bounds in 2015, the chilling effect of increasing regulation became apparent in Colorado this year, with less creativity and originality present in the field of entries at the HIGH TIMES Cannabis Cup held in Denver. The most recent ruling mandates a universal symbol—THC with an exclamation point—that must be stamped or marked on every edible to distinguish it from regular food, even when outside of its packaging. Edibles makers in Colorado fear that if their manufacturing costs continue to increase, customers will return to consuming black market edibles of unknown potency.

California edibles makers continue to enjoy their mostly unregulated marketplace, but that could all be coming to an end with the passage of medical marijuana regulations and a very restrictive initiative to legalize adult use in 2016. The California cannabis industry could look very much like Colorado's by 2018 if overly burdensome regulations continue to push mom-and-pop business out of the picture. It's a shame, because the edible cannabis offerings.........http://www.hightimes.com/read/15-best-edibles-2015

Florida Cops Snared in Venezuela Money Laundering Op

Posted on January 4, 2016 at 1:40 PM Comments comments (0)

The U.S .has been eager to find any evidence that the left-wing government of Venezuela is tainted by narco-trafficking. But now it looks like a Florida police force may have been co-opted by the Venezuelan narco-networks.

Federal authorities are saying that for two years beginning in 2010, police in Bal Harbour, Miami-Dade County, funneled millions in drug money into the bank accounts of Venezuelans—including William Amaro Sánchez, now special assistant to President Nicolás Maduro. The supposed goal was to disrupt the networks, but this supposed undercover sting operation generated millions for a local police task force and never made a single arrest.......http://www.hightimes.com/read/florida-cops-snared-venezuela-money-laundering-op

How Accurate Are The Drug Test Kits That Law Enforcement Use To Prove A Substance Is Marijuana?

drug test kit narcopouch marijuana

I posted an article yesterday about the case of Robert and Addie Harte. The Hartes had their home SWAT raided after police determined that they were illegal growing marijuana in their home. That determination by law enforcement was based on just two things. The first is that Robert Harte was seen buying grow equipment from an indoor garden store (for growing tomatoes). The other was that when cops went through the family’s trash can, they found what they thought to be....................http://www.theweedblog.com/how-accurate-are-drug-test-kits-law-enforcement-substance-marijuana/

By Michael Bachara, Hemp News Correspondent

Yesterday, January 3, the cannabis community lost a colorful and dedicated freedom fighter, John Walsh. Walsh collected signatures for the hemp and cannabis movement for the past thirty years and if asked, he could tell you exactly how many signatures he collected for each and every initiative and ballot measure that relates to hemp or cannabis throughout that period.

“It makes me terribly sad to say that John Walsh, one of the biggest cannabis activists in the country, and dear friend of mine has passed away. It was John that originally introduced me to SSDP during my Freshman year in college. Thank you for everything you have done to make this world a better place,” said former University of Oregon President of..................http://www.theweedblog.com/oregon-marijuana-legalization-legend-john-walsh-passes-away/

Blue Lotus Medicinals Marijuana ??Kush Tea?? Is The Best Way To Medicate While Dealing With A Chest Cold

blue lotus medicinals kush tea marijuana cannabis

It is cold and flu season, which is always a magical time of the year. And by magical I really mean ridiculously lame. I don’t get colds that often, but when I do I get them really bad. No matter where the cold starts (nose, throat, aches, etc.) it almost always makes its way to my lungs. That of course is problematic when I still want to consume cannabis. It really limits my options because I obviously don’t want to inhale cannabis when I have a chest cold. Even vaporizing isn’t desirable depending on how severe the chest cold is.

I recently had a very nasty chest cold. It put me out on sick leave for a couple days from work. The thing that helped me get through it the most was...........http://www.theweedblog.com/blue-lotus-medicinals-marijuana-kush-tea-is-the-best-way-to-medicate-while-dealing-with-a-chest-cold/

Help A Disabled Veteran Who Had His Kids Taken Because Of Cannabis

raymond and amelia schwab marijuana

I just read a heartbreaking article on the Daily Haze. A disabled veteran named Raymond Schwab and his wife Amelia had their children taken away while they were in the process of moving to Colorado so that Raymond could received legal cannabis treatment for PTSD and chronic pain. Per the Daily Haze:

The Schwabs decided to relocate to Colorado, where medical marijuana is legal. So in April 2015, Raymond transferred his job with the Department of Veterans Affairs, left their children with family in Kansas so they could get packed up and move. That was the last they saw of their kids and the real nightmare began.

It turns out the family the children were left with contacted DCF in Kansas, who held a hearing that the Schwabs weren’t informed of, nor represented at. During this hearing, the children were removed from their parents custody and then...............http://www.theweedblog.com/help-a-disabled-veteran-who-had-his-kids-taken-because-of-cannabis/

Why The Senator Wyden Marijuana Community Fundraiser Is A Very Big Deal

Posted on January 4, 2016 at 1:25 PM Comments comments (0)

congress medical marijuana

My favorite political science professor in college would always say that the two most important things in politics are 1) money, and 2) money. In a perfect world it wouldn’t be that way, but when it comes to American politics that’s the way things are, and that will not change anytime soon (if ever). A big reason for the recent marijuana reform victories is because of the profit potential of the marijuana industry. I would prefer that marijuana laws were reformed because it’s the right thing to do, but I also recognize that huge dollar figures help a lot to achieve the end goal of legalization.

2016 is going to be a very big year for marijuana reform. Most people think that to be true because of the initiative efforts that are occurring across the country, or because of state legislatures that will likely be taking up the issue of marijuana reform this year in one form or another. However, there is a lot going on at the federal level as.............. http://www.theweedblog.com/why-the-senator-wyden-marijuana-community-fundraiser-is-a-very-big-deal/

California Would Generate Over One Billion Dollars From Recreational Marijuana Taxes Per Year

Posted on January 4, 2016 at 1:20 PM Comments comments (0)

california department of finance marijuana

I once heard an estimate that half of the marijuana industry in America is located in California. California was the first state to legalize medical marijuana, and while it has yet to legalize recreational marijuana, the medical marijuana industry in California is massive. The black market in California is also massive. According to the California Department of Finance, the taxes that the State of California would generate from a legal, regulated recreational marijuana market would top one billion dollars annually. Per SF Gate:

California cannabis prohibition is costing the state about $1 billion per year in lost tax revenue that’s sorely needed for social services, a new analysis from the state’s Department of Finance reports this December 21.

Department of Finance director Michael Cohen and legislative analyst Mac Taylor reported to the Attorney General Kamala Harris this December that the state stands to gain over $1 billion in uncaptured tax revenue if California legalizes cannabis for adults 21 and over in the November 2016 election.

The Department of Finance serves as................ http://www.theweedblog.com/california-over-one-billion-dollars-recreational-marijuana-taxes-per-year/

Marijuana Economics ?? All Eyes Should Be On The Oregon/Washington Border

washington oregon marijuana pacific northwest

There are four states that have legalized recreational marijuana (and D.C.!) so far in America. Those of course are Alaska, Washington, Oregon, and Colorado. Colorado was the first to allow recreational marijuana sales (January 2014), followed by Washington (July 2014), and then Oregon (limited sales began October 2015). Alaska is still working out their rules, and Washington D.C. doesn’t allow sales (just possession, cultivation, and distribution for no consideration).

Colorado is usually the first place that people look to when it comes to recreational marijuana industry statistics and facts, and rightfully so since it was the first place to allow sales and is considered by most to be the ‘top state’ for marijuana. However, there’s something particularly intriguing about Washington and Oregon to me. Unlike Colorado and Alaska, Washington and Oregon both share a border with another........http://www.theweedblog.com/marijuana-economics-all-eyes-should-be-on-the-oregonwashington-border/

United States Surgeon General To Review Federal Drug Policies

drug war drug treatment centers

One of the most frustrating things about being a marijuana activists is the lack of being offered a fair chance. By that, I mean if marijuana was just given the same amount of consideration, logic, reasoning, and application of scientific research and fact as other substances, marijuana prohibition would likely already be over. In every measurable way marijuana is safer than many other substances that are perfectly legal, and in no way is as dangerous as other substances that are similarly classified at the federal level.

But marijuana has never been on an ‘even playing field’ compared to other substances. Reefer madness tactics and public policy ‘tricks’ have been in place for several decades, and the system is rigged in such a way that it has been extremely difficult to get a fair assessment of marijuana at the federal level. And in the times that a fair assessment was conducted (think Nixon era), the assessment was disregarde.............. http://www.theweedblog.com/united-states-surgeon-general-to-review-federal-drug-policies/

Earl Blumenauer About Moving Forward On Marijuana Reform

Earl Blumenauer About Moving Forward On Marijuana Reform

U.S. Representative Earl Blumenauer has been representing my home state, Oregon, in Congress since 1996. He has been one of my heroes for a long time, and one of my favorite memories since co-founding this blog in 2010 is meeting him this last year at an NCIA event. Earl Blumenauer gave a speech at the International Drug Policy Reform Conference in Washington DC in November, discussing how to move forward on marijuana reform. Earl Blumenauer has led the charge in Congress, and any time I get to hear him speak it’s a treat. Enjoy.........http://www.theweedblog.com/earl-blumenauer-about-moving-forward-on-marijuana-reform/

Travel Guru Rick Steves Has The Best Advice For Fighting ??Big Marijuana??

grow your own weed

‘Big Marijuana’ is like the boogeyman in the marijuana world right now. Marijuana opponents warn of the imminent demise of American society due to the threat of big marijuana. Those claims are nothing more than scare mongering. Many people in the marijuana movement and industry fear a corporate takeover of marijuana, and those fears are well founded in my opinion. Travel guru Rick Steves has some stellar advice to combat the corporate takeover of marijuana – grow your own.

Rick Steves offered up that advice in an interview he did with KUOW a few weeks back. The comments came as Rick Steves was discussing the need for Washington State to add a home cultivation provision to its
