On 2016’s Leap Day, February 29, the organization LEAP (Law Enforcement Against Prohibition) launched their first U.K. branch- and received praise from none other than Sir Richard Branson himself.
The launch of LEAP UK was announced by Major Neill Franklin (Ret.), the Executive Director of LEAP. In a followup email dated March 3 he shared the above video of famed billionaire, explorer and entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson.
In the video, Branson appears comfortable- comfortable clothes, comfortable surroundings and a sincere comfort with the subject matter.
“The so-called War on Drugs has been an enormous failure,” he said. “No matter how aggressive our strategies, they have failed completely to curb the drug demand or supply in a noticeable way.”
Sir Richard Branson outlined the need for “smart, evidence-based policies that empower law enforcement agencies to do what they were set up to.............http://www.theweedblog.com/sir-richard-branson-endorses-leap-of-u-k/

Ohioans For Medical Marijuana Submit Initiative Petition To State A.G.

Backers of a proposed 2016 ballot measure to establish a comprehensive medical marijuana program in Ohio submitted their initiative petition to the Ohio Attorney General on Thursday with more than 2,000 signatures.
The office has 10 days to examine the official summary of the initiative and confirm the petition contains at least 1,000 valid signatures of Ohio voters. The petition will then be sent to the Ohio Ballot Board, which will have 10 days to review the measure and confirm it complies with Ohio initiative laws. Initiative backers will then need to collect an additional 305,591 valid signatures of Ohio voters by early July in order to qualify for the November ballot.
Ohioans for Medical Marijuana, a campaign committee formed by the Marijuana Policy Project (MPP), posted the full initiative text, the official initiative summary, and a Q&A with MPP Executive Director Rob Kampia on its website earlier this week at https://www.ohioansformmj.org/initiative.
“This initiative was drafted to ensure seriously ill Ohioans have safe and legal access to medical marijuana if their doctors believe it will alleviate their pain and suffering,” said MPP communications director Mason Tvert. “The one benefit of not already having a medical marijuana law is..............http://www.theweedblog.com/ohioans-for-medical-marijuana-submit-initiative-petition-to-state-a-g/

Idaho Medical Marijuana Petition Campaign Update

New Approach Idaho pulled the medical marijuana petition on February 19, 2016, after recently receiving correspondence from the American Academy of Pediatrics, asking for the AAP name be removed from the front page of the petition as one of the supporters of medical marijuana.
The oversight was not intentional, rather a misunderstanding after members of NAI’s petition draft committee were alerted to the much-publicized January 2015 articles in the Wall Street Journal and NBC News online (three months before the release of the petition) that “…the American Academy of Pediatrics is recommending the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency reclassify marijuana so that more research can be conducted in the hopes of finding benefits for children. The influential medical society also proposes that marijuana should be made available on a compassionate use basis for children with debilitating or life-threatening illnesses (1) and ”…the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) also recognized marijuana may be a treatment option for kids “with life-limiting or severely debilitating conditions for whom current therapies are inadequate.”(2).
NAI did not intentionally mislead, manipulate or lie to the Idaho public, as stated by the Idaho Office of Drug Policy’s Elisha Figueroa in a recent Guest Contributor article found in The Independent News, rather AAP’s listing as supporters of medical marijuana was an understandable oversight which should have been verified in-depth by not only NAI’s executive staff prior to.............http://www.theweedblog.com/idaho-medical-marijuana-petition-campaign-update/

I was passed along a info about a couple of Oregon cannabis companies teaming up to donate a portion of sales revenue to the Bernie Sanders campaign. See the story below via a press release I received:
As the 2016 presidential election draws closer new light is being shed on many political issues. One issue that has been getting much more attention in this year’s debates than in previous election years is the legalization of medical and recreational marijuana. According to Pew Research Center Polls, about six in 10 Democrats support marijuana legalization, with that number jumping to nearly 75 percent in millennial democrats. In 2008, no major candidate supported decriminalization during the debates. As legalization continues to move to the forefront of American politics candidates are being forced to voice an opinion.
The first major presidential candidate to speak in support of marijuana legalization is Bernie Sanders. “The time is long overdue for us to take marijuana off the federal government’s list of outlawed drugs,” he said. “In my view, states should have the right to regulate marijuana the same way that state and local laws now govern sales of alcohol and tobacco.” Bernie has recognized the importance of continuing medical marijuana research in an effort to educate the American public about...............http://www.theweedblog.com/oregon-cannabis-companies-donate-portion-of-sales-revenue-to-bernie-sanders-campaign/

Oaksterdam University, the first cannabis college in the United States, will be in Las Vegas March 11 to 14, 2016, to host its renown Cannabis Horticulture Seminar. The entire seminar will be held at The Plaza Hotel and is the most comprehensive and advanced learning opportunity in the country for prospective and existing cannabis growers.

Group Files Referendum Petitions To Halt Detroit Medical Marijuana Dispensary Ordinances

The City Clerk today accepted two sets of petitions intended to revoke Detroit’s new medical marijuana dispensary licensing and zoning programs. Citizens for Sensible Cannabis Reform (CSCR) member Greg Pawlowski submitted the petitions before 9AM this morning, March 1. The Clerk’s office has stamped and counted the petitions, determining that each separate set contains more than 4,055 signatures as required by referendum law.
Detroit’s City Council passed two ordinances, one in October and another in December, intended to slash the number of businesses in the city distributing medical marijuana to patients who are certified by a physician and licensed by the state. The ordinances are unduly harsh, claim advocates and business, and impose restrictions on medical marijuana distribution centers that are more strict than any other commercial land use authorized by the city. Advocates and the Reform organization submitted one set of petitions per ordinance.
“The Detroit City Council inexplicably passed unworkable and dysfunctional ordinances that compromise the many existing distribution establishments, as well as the patron patients who have come to rely on these establishments as their primary source of medication,” said Jamie Lowell, Treasurer of CSCR. “The city’s current plan also would severely limit the ability for citizens and aspiring entrepreneurs to take advantage of................http://www.theweedblog.com/group-files-referendum-petitions-to-halt-detroit-medical-marijuana-dispensary-ordinances/

Everyone Should Own Copies Of The ??Cannabis Health Summit??

The Virtual Cannabis Health Summit occurred recently, and it was fantastic. Everyone I’ve talked to has said so. The speakers at the virtual summit were second to none, and the amount of information provided was substantial. The summit was completely free to watch live too, which was why I told so many people to check it out. Usually the only way that you get that much solid info is by paying huge sums of money and traveling to who knows where for a conference. That can be very expensive, and often requires taking time off work if you are like me. It’s not a viable option for most people.
There are a lot of readers that have asked me if the summit is going to be aired again because they missed it. If that is you, you are in luck! The entire Virtual Cannabis Health Summit is available now on DVD and/or digital download. There is a fee ($67 digital, $97 for digital and DVD), but it’s a very reasonable fee considering what you get for it. Below is a sample of the speakers and topics that were covered at the summit and that will be on the download/DVDs:

You get a bunch of bonuses too which weren’t accessible during the live presentation. You can find out more about what bonuses are offered at this link here, which is also where you can purchase the summit. I know that for me personally, on my next payday, I’m going to purchase the package that has both the digital and DVD versions of the event so that I can share the DVDs with friends and family and I suggest............http://www.theweedblog.com/everyone-should-own-copies-of-the-cannabis-health-summit/

Latest Poll Shows 65% Support For 2016 Florida Medical Marijuana Initiative

Polls can be deceiving, which is why I always tell people to take poll results with a grain of salt. However, polls are useful in trying to gauge support for something at a particular time. Polls are certainly better than just blind guessing. I always try to find as many polls as possible and kind of average them out. That is not always easy, as there’s sometimes only one poll out there, or only one recent poll out there.
A poll was released yesterday by Public Policy Polling, which found overwhelming support for Florida’s medical marijuana initiative. Per the poll:
It looks like there’s a good chance the second time will be the charm when it comes to getting a medical marijuana initiative passed in Florida. 65% of voters say they’ll vote for one this fall to only 28% who are opposed, passing the 60% threshold with some breathing room. There’s bipartisan support for the measure with Democrats (75/18), independents (70/22), and Republicans (53/40) all expressing their favor for it.
I remember during the 2014 campaign there were several polls which showed medical marijuana winning in Florida by an even larger margin of victory than this poll. When all of the dust settled, the lead disappeared and the initiative lost by just two percentage points on Election Day. Lets make sure............http://www.theweedblog.com/latest-poll-shows-65-support-for-2016-florida-medical-marijuana-initiative/

Created to destigmatize cannabis and the people who use it, The 420 Games athletic event has experienced great success in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park for the past two years. This March, The 420 Games will debut in Los Angeles, the first leg of a four-state, six-city tour. Participants are “Going the Extra Mile for Cannabis” in this 4.20 mile race that is longer than a typical 5k. The course takes runners from the Santa Monica Pier to Venice Beach and finishes back at the pier. Tickets can be purchased at 420Games.org
In the last 18 months, The 420 Games has acquired nearly 60,000 Facebook fans and features an event series that continues to expand. Recently featured in Newsweek magazine, The 420 Games has announced multiple events in California, Colorado, Seattle and Oregon. The event series will feature marathons, mountain bike races, and stand-up paddleboard competitions, amongst other contests. Future locales include San Francisco, Boulder, Denver, Portland and Seattle.
“Our attendance has doubled from the first event to the second, we expect thousands of people to come run or walk for cannabis respect on March 26th in LA. There is a passion and vibe of camaraderie at these events that is very inspiring to see.” - Jim McAlpine, event organizer and founder of SnowBomb
420 Games’ McAlpine has been active in several causes. At the recent AIDS Walk in...........http://www.theweedblog.com/the-420-games-to-invade-los-angeles/

What Does Super Tuesday Mean for Cannabis Legislation?

The biggest day of the primaries is upon us, with more delegates up for grabs on March 1 than any other time in the race. While marijuana reform is not a priority for most primary voters, the candidates' positions on cannabis could have an impact on how voters perceive them – especially in states where marijuana policy is being discussed.
Only two out of 22 Super Tuesday races are happening in a state or territory where cannabis is completely illegal. Most states have some form of medical marijuana in the books – even if it's just provisions for non-psychoactive CBD oil. Then there are the cannabis-friendly states of Colorado, which is having Democratic and Republican caucuses, and Alaska, where Republicans will be caucusing.
While some analyses show that Bernie Sanders could have a leg up on Hillary Clinton thanks to his more progressive policies on pot, there probably aren't that many marijuana-driven voters. "What is more likely is that his position on marijuana policy is part of a broader set of things that set him apart from her. It's the notion of what makes him viewed as a more progressive candidate," said Mason Tvert, director of communications at the Marijuana Policy Project.
With that in mind, let's have a look at the Super Tuesday races where cannabis legalization is most important...........

Buds and Roses has earned a reputation as one of the very best dispensaries in the country. Located in Studio City, California, Buds and Roses is an innovative force in the world of marijuana. The company’s emphasis on quality over quantity has led to multiple Cannabis Cups since it was established in 2006. Under the leadership of president Aaron Justis, Buds & Roses has distinguished itself by imposing its own strict regulations, training and developing cultivators in house and focusing on medicinal value.

Overwhelming Support For Medical Marijuana Reform In Texas According To Poll

Texas is home to some of the most passionate marijuana activists I have ever seen. It is always bittersweet for me though because Texas is not an easy place to achieve marijuana reform. In most states that have reformed its marijuana laws, there is a citizen initiative process where citizens can gather signatures and put things to a vote on the next election assuming the required amount of verified signatures are gathered. Texas does not have an initiative process. So the only way to reform Texas’ harsh marijuana laws are via Texas’ Legislature. That’s not an easy thing to do, but going back to those passionate activists, if anyone can do it, it’s Texas activists.
There is a big push right now for medical marijuana reform in Texas. According to poll results that were released yesterday, there is enormous support for that type of reform in Texas. Per KCEN TV:
The Texas Tegna Poll indicates 71 percent of the state’s voters would support expanding medical marijuana treatments for patients suffering other health problems. Another 19 percent oppose the idea, while 11 percent aren’t sure.
“The fact that even Republicans, by a margin of almost 71 percent, support marijuana uses for medicinal health reasons I think suggests that this is where you’re beginning to see the trend,” said Bob Stein, KHOU’s political analyst.
While there is huge support for medical marijuana reform in Texas, the same poll found that Texans are not quite ready to legalize recreational marijuana. The poll found just 41% support for..............
