I have been a very big critic of New Jersey’s medical marijuana program. The list of qualifying conditions is very short, patients aren’t allowed to grow their own medicine, and the only legal way that they can obtain medical marijuana is by visiting a licensed medical marijuana dispensary. Up until recently, there were only four dispensaries for the entire state. A fifth one opened this last week. Per Marijuana Business Daily:

The fifth dispensary in the state opened its doors this morning after getting final approval Wednesday from the New Jersey Department of Health.

Breakwater Treatment & Wellness – located in southern New Jersey’s Middlesex County – will see patients by appointment only for now. The dispensary plans to grow enough cannabis to eventually serve up to 3,000 patients, an executive told NJ.com.

It’s the second permit New Jersey has granted in two months, breaking a logjam in dispensary openings.

The sixth and final dispensary, Foundation Harmony in the city of Secaucus, remains in the background-check phase of the licensing process.

The first Presidential debate for the Democrat side occurred this week and the topic of marijuana came up The internet has been buzzing ever since. During the debate Bernie Sanders was asked if he would vote for marijuana legalization in Nevada if given the chance. Bernie Sanders said that he suspects he would, because essentially prohibition is a terrible thing and has ruined too many lives. The debate moderator (Anderson Cooper) then turned his attention to Hillary Clinton.

He asked if Hillary Clinton was ready to take a position on marijuana legalization yet, because in the past she has refused to. Hillary Clinton then did what she always does, and refused to take a stance on legalization, instead saying there needed to be more time and more research done before she supported legalization and fully supported medical marijuana. A Grand Rapids art gallery will host a fundraiser for the MILegalize petition drive on October 29.

The fundraiser will be held at the impressive Richard App Gallery and includes a cocktail party with select speakers. The event was conceived and organized by MILegalize Board Member Michael Tuffelmire from Grand Rapids. Three weeks from today Ohio voters will caste their ballots and decide if ResponsibleOhio’s marijuana legalization initiative will become law or not. Ohio Issue 3 would legalize the possession of marijuana, personal cultivation of marijuana, and for some, the ability to cultivate marijuana for profit. MagicalButter and the Weed for Warriors Project kick off the 2nd Annual Cannaball Run for Vets for cannabis Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder treatment to highlight the mounting evidence surrounding the issue of PTSD. Smugglers have been using Yokota Air Base, the headquarters of U.S. troops in western Tokyo, to mail pot into Japan.

“Japanese customs officials at Yokota Air Base discovered marijuana being sent to an APO box in September,” officials said Tuesday in a statement, as reported by Stars and Stripes.

The pot, valued at 8.5 million yen or $72,000, originated in Canada, according to the Tokyo Broadcast System.

The package was sent as unofficial mail to a U.S. service member who was unaware of its contents, according to police quoted by Japanese broadcaster NHK World.

The American service member gave the package to a Japanese national who then gave it to another foreign national at a local bus station in Tokyo, according to the NHK report. Both were arrested.

Japan’s National Police Agency and the U.S. military were immediately notified, and Tokyo Metropolitan Police are leading an investigation into the incident.

This is not the first time smugglers have used the military mail system to send drugs across international borders.

In 2012, the Korea Customs Service found 6.6 pounds of mostly synthetic marijuana, worth $52,100, in mail bound for U.S. service members in South Korea.

According to the most recent count that I’ve heard, there are at least 148 medical marijuana dispensaries operating in Detroit, despite the fact that the dispensaries are operating in a legal gray area at best according to the State of Michigan. Whether dispensaries are legal or not according to the State of Michigan, one thing is for sure – medical marijuana dispensaries are not going away in Detroit. They are here to stay, and the sooner laws reflect that fact the better off Detroit will be. It sounds like Detroit regulators are recognizing that fact, as it seems that they have approved an ordinance that would license medical marijuana dispensaries. Per Marijuana Business Daily:

Detroit’s medical marijuana industry received a big boost Tuesday with the passage of an ordinance that allows the city to license marijuana dispensaries.

The 6-1 vote gives Detroit the power to establish licensing guidelines, inspection requirements, a fee schedule and penalties – in essence helping to legitimize the scores of unregulated dispensaries that currently exist in the city.

Under the ordinance, all dispensaries will have to obtain a license from the city or shut down. While some – or perhaps many – existing dispensaries won’t be able to meet the regulations and will therefore have to close, the move will stabilize the environment for those that can make the transition.
