Understanding the role of Silicon (Si) in plant growth and how it affects plant health has recently been a subject of substantial research.

Experienced growers have always wondered why plants do better in soil as compared to soilless mediums. The difference is likely to be (Si), which is naturally available in soil but not in media used by the indoor grow industry.

Silicon (Si) is not considered an essential plant nutrient by plant scientists. However, recent studies have found that it affects plant growth and quality, photosynthesis, transpiration and plant resistance to stresses such as drought, nutrient deficiency, temperature etc. For plants grown in substrates silicon concentration is limited and its supplementation has been found to be beneficial. In studies conducted by Greenhouse Management in 2010, Todd Cavins, Steve Marek and Sophia Kamenidou found that the silicon concentration increased in all plant species that received supplemental silicon treatments. Jeff Sessions is Sworn in as Attorney General

On Thursday, former Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions was sworn in as the 84th Attorney General of the United States. Sessions’ confirmation arrived on the same day as Trump issued three more executive orders beefing up several aspects of law enforcement. Sessions was the first U.S. Senator to formally endorse Trump’s candidacy, and he has been an exceptionally vocal opponent of cannabis in the past.

On Wednesday, the Senate confirmed the appointment of Sessions in a narrow 52-47 vote. “Mr. President, I thank you for this great honor,” Sessions said. “It’s something that I never thought would happen in my life.” Sessions will head the U.S. Department of Justice and serve as the nation’s highest legal officer that represents the government.

The initial announcement of the possibility of the appointment of Sessions as attorney general sent civil rights activists and cannabis activists into a frenzy. Peru Government Announces Proposal to Legalize Medical Cannabis

Yesterday, the Peruvian government announced that it will present a plan to legalize medical cannabis. Although no date or further information was set for the proposal, the government seems adamant on making progress to support medical cannabis “for the treatment of serious and terminal illnesses.”

The administration of Peru’s current president, Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, noted that this decision followed an unfortunate incident that recently occurred. Police in Lima, Peru raided a house where a few parents were growing cannabis in order to make oil to use in treating their kids who suffer from debilitating conditions such as epilepsy.

One of the parents who was a part of the indoor grow home was Aida Farfan. According to The Associated Press, she is one of more than 80 participating members who use the oil to help treat their children’s ailments. Farfan commented that the group has tried for a while now to petition lawmakers to discuss legalizing medical cannabis, but with no positive movement.

More Businesses Dropping Pot from Pre-Employment Drug Tests

Thankfully, testing for pot in Colorado work sites has declined over the past two years. Some companies, seven percent, have totally dropped marijuana from their pre-employment tests and three percent have removed it from all drug tests.

It’s about time, considering that recreational weed in Colorado was approved by voters in 2012 and medical marijuana in 2000.

A survey done by the Mountain States Employers Council (MSEC) in December marked a shift from 2014, when when one-in-five employers reported stringent drug-testing policies, reported the Denver Post, which pointed out that these results don’t necessarily mean businesses are happy about their employees smoking weed.

“It’s because we have low unemployment,” said Curtis Graves, an attorney with MSEC. “They may prefer a zero-tolerance approach. From a business perspective, they just can’t afford to be as choosy now.”

Gee, Colorado…what are you complaining about?

Graves said some employers would likely resume testing if the unemployment rate went back up to six or seven percent; it was only three percent in December, among the lowest in the country. The national unemployment rate is 4.8 percent.

Barring a historic turnaround, Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions is set to be confirmed as Donald Trump’s attorney general today and will take over the reins of the Justice Department sometime this month.

Sessions has more support than other Trump Cabinet appointee, such as Betsy DeVos, whose appointment as education secretary advanced on Tuesday after a 50-50 deadlock in the U.S. Senate, with the tie broken by Vice President Mike Pence. DeVos demonstrated so little proficiency in education during her confirmation hearings that two Republican senators—Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska—felt confident enough to vote against her.

In contrast, Sessions, a regressive hard-liner, can count on support within Democratic ranks. On Tuesday morning, the Senate voted to block a planned Democratic filibuster of Sessions appointment, with Democrat Joe Manchin III of West Virginia—the same Joe Manchin whose strategy to combat the country’s rampant opiate epidemic is a “War on Drugs”—flipping to vote with the Republicans.

According to the two major speeches he’s delivered to date, at his Inauguration and at last summer’s Republican convention, the president believes—or says he believes—that a wave of “American carnage” has drowned the land, and only a new age of “law and order” can beat back the tide of lawlessness.

One way to do that, he suggested Tuesday, is to ensure police and prosecutors can still punish Americans—literally relieving them of their homes, personal property and wealth—without ever even accusing them of committing a crime.

Trump has proven extremely popular among the nation’s police.

On Tuesday, he welcomed a delegation of the country’s county sheriffs to Washington for a face-to-face. According to Canada’s National Post, a former editor with Vice Media used his position at the high-octane media outlet to recruit young journalists and artists into a “transnational cocaine-smuggling ring.”

Current and former Vice employees alleged to the Post that 26-year-old Yaroslav Pastukhov, a.k.a. Slava Pastuk, personally tried to recruit them as drug couriers during his time as music editor for Noisey, offering a fee of $10,000 to smuggle cocaine hidden in the lining of suitcases. Whether you smoke weed, do dabs or vaporize, you may be in the dark about how much THC you actually ingest while you’re getting high. A shot, a glass of wine and a beer all have roughly the same amount of alcohol in them based on the volume they contain, but no such equivalency exists for cannabis.

We’ll start with the bowl—one of the most common ways people smoke weed or otherwise consume cannabis in North America. Bowls can be packed big or small, but most are in the ballpark of a quarter gram.

You can assume good market pot to have 18 percent THC; that is, for every gram of pot you have roughly 180 mg of THC. Accounting for at least 60 percent loss due to burning, you can expect a full bowl to deliver 18 mg of THC. Split it with a friend, and you each get almost 10 mg.

Rolling a joint requires more pot than a bowl, but joints are actually slightly more efficient at combusting THC, by about 10 percent. A pinner with 0.4 grams of weed should deliver roughly 36 mg of THC, while a gram joint will dish out 90 mg of THC.

Respect States Marijuana Laws Act of 2017 Introduced by Republican Congressman

Cannabis advocate, Republican Congressman Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA), introduced the Respect States Marijuana Laws Act of 2017 this week. The bill is aimed at protecting individuals in the cannabis industry against threats of federal prosecution.

The bill, HR975 was introduced by the longtime Congressional ally to the cannabis industry, and Trump supporter Rep. Rohrabacher. A coalition of six Democrats and seven Republicans are co-sponsoring the measure.

The Respect State Marijuana Laws Act of 2017 bill would basically place state law above federal when it comes to the Controlled Substances Act – as long as the individuals follow their state’s laws regarding the federally illegal plant.

It’s not the first time a bill like this was filed. HR1940 was introduced to last year’s Congress, but didn’t get any traction.

The move by the California Republican wasn’t out of fear of the new Trump administration, as was made clear by his comments in January, after the confirmation hearing for America’s next Attorney General.

Israel Moves to Allow Export of Medical Marijuana 0

Israel is known for it’s medical marijuana research and may finally be allowed to export the plant, if some Israeli lawmakers have their way. The Israeli Ministerial Committee on Legalization gave the initial green light for the export of medical marijuana this past Sunday.

According to the Reuters report, the official who introduced the legislation, Yoav Kisch, says it will help Israel’s agricultural industry. He also adds that the bill defines, for the first time, the whole field of medical cannabis and allows regulating its export.

Israel is well-known for it’s cannabis research. Dr. Raphael Mechoulam, nicknamed “The Father of Cannabis”, is organic chemist and professor of Medicinal Chemistry at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel.

Dr. Mechoulam is hailed as the first person to isolate and synthesize tetrahydrocannabinol, better known as THC.

The country of Israel is a world leader in medical cannabis research, despite its small pool of medical patients. New York Lawmakers Pushing for Recreational Pot in 2017

New York lawmakers are hoping that the recent legalization of marijuana in Massachusetts and Maine will inspire the state’s legislative forces to take similar action in the 2017 session.

Two bills—A3506 and S3040—were recently introduced in the New York General Assembly and in the Senate aimed at creating a system that would allow marijuana to be taxed and regulated across the state in a manner similar to beer. The proposals would enact the “Marijuana Regulation and Taxation Act,” which would give adults 18 and older the freedom to possess up to two ounces of weed and cultivate as many as six plants at home for personal use. It would also give way to the creation of a fully legal cannabis industry whereby adults 21 and older could purchase cannabis products at retail dispensaries statewide.

“The intent of this act is to regulate, control, and tax marihuana in a manner similar to alcohol, generate millions of dollars in new revenue, prevent access to marihuana by those under the age of eighteen years, reduce the illegal drug market and reduce violent crime, reduce the racially disparate impact of existing marihuana laws, allow industrial hemp to be farmed in New York state, and create new industries and increase employment,” the proposal reads.

So far, eight states, including neighboring Massachusetts, have legalized the leaf in this capacity.
