Florida voters are going to see a medical marijuana legalization initiative on the ballot for the second election cycle in a row. The 2016 version is different than the 2014 version in a handful of ways. The 2014 initiative lost by just 2 percent. An improved initiative, lessons learned from the 2014 campaign, and a higher voter turnout due to a Presidential election will hopefully overcome that 2 percent. Florida residents want medical marijuana, and not the version previously passed by the Florida Legislature that doesn’t really help anyone. The Editorial Board at the Miami-Herald agrees. There are half a dozen states that have a shot at legalizing recreational marijuana via citizen initiative in 2016 in my opinion – California, Nevada, Arizona, Michigan, Maine, and Massachusetts. Australia is on the verge of legalizing a nationwide medical marijuana program. The Turnbull Government took action earlier this week to legalize the leaf for medicinal purposes, a plan that would allow the nation to engage in the controlled cultivation and distribution of marijuana products for patients all over the country suffering from serious health conditions.

According to The Independent, a measure put forth by the Liberal Party would amend the Narcotic Drugs Act of 1967 and unleash marijuana from its illegal status in an effort to study its effects on patients in clinical trials, as well as provide access for those under the care of a physician. While President Obama recently announced that he didn’t have any plans to reform the marijuana laws in the United States before turning over his key to the White House, a proposed federal budget released by his administration earlier this week seems poised to disable a Congressional rider that has prevented the District of Columbia from establishing a taxed and regulated pot market for the past couple of years.

According to an analysis provided by Tom Angell with the Marijuana Majority, the proposed Fiscal Year 2017 budget would go against the grain of the current policies preventing the D.C. Colorado’s regulated marijuana system generated more than $135 million in revenue for the state in 2015, including more than $35 million for school construction projects, according to the Colorado Department of Revenue.

Marijuana is a fantastic pain reliever. I was diagnosed with arthritis in my foot last year, and nothing helps me deal with the pain in my foot as well as cannabis. My doctor tried to get me on prescription drugs to help fight the pain, which isn’t constant but there are definitely those days. The Turnbull Government will today introduce landmark legislation providing the “missing piece” for Australian patients and their doctors to access a safe, legal and reliable supply of medicinal cannabis products for the management of painful and chronic conditions.

Minister for Health Sussan Ley today announced the amendments to the Narcotics Drugs Act 1967 would allow the controlled cultivation of cannabis for medicinal or scientific purposes through one single national licensing scheme – an Australian first.

Ms Ley said, if passed, this legislation would open the way for Australians with painful and chronic conditions to get access to the relief they needed where this was determined by their doctors to be of potential benefit.

“This is an important day for Australia and the many advocates who have fought long and hard to challenge the stigma around medicinal cannabis products,” Ms Ley said.

“For Australia, this is the missing piece in a patient’s journey.

“Importantly, having a safe, legal and reliable source of products will ensure medical practitioners are now at the centre of the decision making process on whether medicinal cannabis may be beneficial for their patient.”

Cannabinoids are safe and effective in the treatment of chronic pain conditions, according to a review of recent clinical trials published online ahead of print in the Canadian Journal of Anesthesia.

Investigators at the University of Montreal, Department of Anesthesiology evaluated the results of 26 clinical trials “of good or excellent quality” involving 1,364 subjects. Trials assessed the use of various types of cannabinoid preparations, including herbal cannabis, liquid and oral cannabis extracts, and synthetic cannabinoid agents in pain treatment.

Authors reported that cannabinoids were efficacious in alleviating various types of pain, including pain due to neuropathy, musculoskeletal disorders, fibromyalgia, HIV, and other chronic pain conditions.

They concluded, “Overall, the recent literature supports the idea that currently available cannabinoids are modestly effective analgesics that provide a safe, reasonable therapeutic option for managing chronic non-cancer-related pain and possibly cancer-related pain.”

At the beginning of 2015 a lot of people were estimating that Colorado would sell over one billion dollars worth of cannabis. Recreational marijuana became legal to sell in Colorado at the beginning of 2014, with a regulated medical marijuana system already in existence. The roll out of recreational marijuana sales took a bit to ramp up, and 2014 was seen as a ‘warm up’ of sorts. 2015 was predicted to be the year that the one billion dollar mark would be crossed in Colorado, and Colorado came very, very close.
