The event, hosted by Texans for Responsible Marijuana Policy, is the fourth in a series of events being held around the state as part of an effort to inject the marijuana policy debate into 2016 state legislative races. Regional events are also scheduled for Houston on December 12, Amarillo on January 9, and Lubbock on January 10.

The featured speaker at Saturday’s event will be Nick Novello, an officer with the Dallas Police Department and member of Law Enforcement Against Prohibition (LEAP). After the most recent election in Canada, a lot of people feel that marijuana legalization is inevitable in Canada. And rightfully so, because the person leading the charge is the newly elected Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau. This is something that Canadian police seem to be aware of too, but instead of embracing the impending changes to Canadian marijuana policy, they did the opposite and raided three medical marijuana dispensaries in B.C. this week. Per Vice News:

In seeming defiance of the new government’s intention to legalize marijuana, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police have followed through on their threat to bust three medical marijuana dispensaries in British Columbia. And at least one is vowing to re-open.

“It is unfortunate that the RCMP decided the best way to deal with the coming change in cannabis laws was to detain front line clerks and attempt to prevent access of medical cannabis patients,” reads a statement from Trees Dispensary, released Tuesday evening.

The Nanaimo medical marijuana store said that the raid on their storefront “[flies] in the face of public opinion, and the stance of our newly-­elected federal government.”

Marijuana reform is sweeping across North America, and law enforcement is seeing the writing on the wall for their budgets, whether they want to admit it or not. Cannabis use is associated with improved outcomes in opioid-dependent subjects undergoing outpatient treatment, according to data published online ahead of print in the journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence. While almost everyone is aware by now that conflicting state and federal law makes it highly illegal to transport weed through the mail, some have been surprised to learn that it is also apparently a violation to use the United States Postal Service to distribute advertisements for the marijuana industry.

A report published this week in The Bulletin indicates that the U.S. Postal Service in Portland recently published a warning to newspapers across the city suggesting that running ads pertaining to cannabis might bring some heat down courtesy of the federal government. The memo, which uses a snippet from the U.S. Code on Food and Drugs, says running an “Ad in any publication with the purpose of seeking or offering illegally to receive, buy, or distribute a Schedule I controlled substances” is a violation of federal law.

Of course, this development invoked a great deal of panic in unsuspecting publishers doing business in the Portland area. Some of the newspapers there have been working with marijuana operations for years marketing their goods and services in the same way they would with other industries. However, the message coming from the USPS, which calls its recent memo a “reminder of existing federal law,” is that all of these transactions have been against the law.

Minnesota Commissioner of Health Dr. Ed Ehlinger announced Wednesday that intractable pain, as defined in Minnesota law, will be added to the list of qualifying conditions for which patients can legally access medical marijuana.

The commissioner must notify the chairs and ranking minority members of the legislative health and public safety policy committees. Intractable pain will become a qualifying condition for medical marijuana effective August 1, 2016, unless the legislature passes a law stating otherwise.

The vast majority of the 23 states with workable medical marijuana programs allow the use of medical marijuana to treat intractable pain.
