There is a trend in America right now when it comes to medical marijuana states. The newer the state, the stricter the program, which then translates to higher prices for medicine. An agent working in the Seattle branch of the Internal Revenue Service is now facing criminal charges after extorting money from the owner of a local cannabis dispensary in exchange for a lenient audit.

According to a report from the Seattle Times, Paul Hurley, 42, is on the road to federal prison for attempting to squeeze tens of thousands of dollars out of a businessman for help with a delinquent tax bill. Prosecutors say Hurley presented the dispensary owner with documents that indicated a tax debt of nearly $300,000 and then suggested the bill would have been in upwards of $1 million had he not worked some magic.

That is when Hurley asked if the two could talk “off the record,” and then, shortly thereafter, demanded $20,000 for doing the shop owner a solid. At first, the businessman refused to comply with the agent’s unusual shakedown, but eventually called him back to make a deal.

Little did Hurley know, the business owner had called federal authorities the moment Hurley left the dispensary, and together, they staged a sting operation to bring this thug to his knees.

The Michigan Comprehensive Cannabis Law Reform Committee (MILegalize), the state’s grassroots effort to legalize marijuana for adult use, is near the midway point in their campaign. Committee Chair Jeffrey Hank reports, “We are where we need to be with our signature count, and it’s due to the tireless efforts of our volunteer army.”

Chronic pain patients who use herbal cannabis daily for one-year report reduced discomfort and increased quality of life compared to controls, and do not experience an increased risk of serious side effects, according to clinical data published online ahead of print in the Journal of Pain.

Researchers at McGill University in Montreal assessed the long-term health of 216 medicinal cannabis users with chronic non-cancer pain who consumed a daily standardized dose (12.5 percent THC) of herbal cannabis compared to 215 controls (chronic pain suffers who did not use cannabis). Subjects in study were approved by Health Canada to legally use medicinal cannabis and consumed, on average, 2.5 grams of herb per day, typically via inhalation or vaporization.

Investigators reported that daily cannabis consumers possessed no greater risk than non-users to experience “serious adverse events.” Specifically, researchers identified no significant adverse changes in consumers’ cognitive skills, pulmonary function, or blood work following one-year of daily cannabis consumption. I received the following legislative alert out of Michigan:

A series of critical bills emerged from committee and are heading to the House floor for a vote. While the vast majority of their provisions are significant improvements over Michigan’s current medical marijuana system, the price tag is high. To offset some of the cost, patients would face an 8% tax on medicine.

Let your state representative know that to succeed, it has to be a program patients can afford.

Few would argue with the fact that Michigan’s medical marijuana program is in need of an update. The current system offers few protections for individuals and businesses that provide medical cannabis to patients. HB 4209 is designed to establish statewide protections and consistent regulations. A companion bill, HB 4210, improves on the program by clearly including non-smoked forms of cannabis products. Finally, HB 4827 establishes tracking requirements for those who cultivate, process, transport, and provide medical cannabis to patients.

I have read more cannabis books than most I think. The United for Care campaign came very close to legalizing medical marijuana in Florida during the 2014 Election. The initiative received roughly 58% of the vote (Florida requires 60% of the vote in order for the initiative to pass). The campaign took the loss in stride, regrouped, and has been working towards a 2016 effort. The campaign is on a roll right now, having gathered over half a million signatures already. Over 500,000 signatures have been collected on United for Care’s initiative to legalize medical cannabis in Florida, Campaign Manager Ben Pollara tells us.
