“I’ve had more doors slammed in my face by legislators. It’s been an absolute nightmare,” stated Mike Graham, an early proponent of medical marijuana, who’s been fighting the fight for legalization in Illinois for nearly 15 years.

A resident of Kankakee County, south of Chicago, Graham has degenerative disc disease in his spine. “I spent three years in a hospital bed on Oxycontin, not knowing my name. A hospice nurse said I had to get off the 14 different pills I was taking and needed to take some pot. I was down to 130 pounds and couldn’t keep food down. At 6-foot 4-inches, I was pretty skinny. I’m up to 250 now. I’ve been opioid free now for five to six years.”

Graham said after all the hard work toward legalization, “We didn’t get the bill passed that we wanted. This was not the intent of what we started to do 14 to 15 years ago.”

After the state eliminated chronic pain and nausea from the qualifying list, greatly limiting the number of patients who would qualify for medical marijuana cards, Graham explained, “My background’s in business. Late last year I bumped into former NBA player Cliff Robinson at the airport in Portland, Oregon. The marijuana jobs for February 2016 is out. It looks like jobs were up across the board in every state. The largest jumps in jobs by percentage of growth were in the Pacific Northwest. The Florida Senate voted unanimously to approve SB 1044, which reforms the state’s “Contraband Forfeiture Act”. Introduced by Sen. Jeff Brandes, the bill now heads to Florida House of Representatives for a floor vote. The House companion, HB 889, passed its final committee of reference last week. The two bills are identical as amended and if HB 889 passes, civil asset forfeiture reform will head to Gov. Scott to be signed into law.

Civil asset forfeiture reform is a core national policy priority of the Drug Policy Alliance (“DPA”) and Florida is a state the group has specifically targeted for reform. Theshia Naidoo, Senior Staff Attorney for DPA, issued the following statement:

“This is a tremendous step towards reforming Florida’s outdated forfeiture laws. The unanimity of the Senate vote speaks volumes to the necessity of these important reforms. The House needs to act quickly to pass this law when it meets next week.”

Attorney Ron Book, who represents DPA in the Florida legislature, said, “The broad, bipartisan coalition that Sen. Jeff Brandes built in the Florida Senate is what made these reforms possible. This legislation heads to the House with consensus amongst both parties, law enforcement, and reform advocates. We hope the House will act with the same unanimity that the Senate just did.”

A cannabis company in Portland, Oregon is the latest marijuana business to raise money for presidential candidate Bernie Sanders. Sanders has been the most outspoken in terms of marijuana reform, drawing support from all corners of the industry.

Dispensaries Foster Buds and Glisan Buds, which are owned by the same parent company, are partnering with marijuana grower Farmer 12 for its "Burn One for Bernie" campaign. They're selling special one-gram joints for $10 apiece and will donate 10 percent of sales to the Sanders campaign.

"[Sanders] wants to keep the medical program alive for the nation, which is awesome because without the medical program, we wouldn’t be where we are today," Foster Buds manager Ken Martin told KPTV.

Other businesses in the pot industry have also been championing the candidate. Just last week, a Portland-based pipe company announced its "Burners for Bernie" set of ceramic pipes and is donating 10 percent of the proceeds to the Sanders campaign.

While the legality of such efforts are questionable, it's unlikely a campaign would go after their own supporters. LITTLE FALLS, N.J. (AP) -- The New Jersey attorney general's office has notified prosecutors that a lab technician failed to properly analyze evidence in a drug case, calling into question more than 7,800 criminal cases he's worked on over the last decade.

Division of Criminal Justice director Elie Honig wrote in a memo last week that Kamal Shah was observed spending insufficient time analyzing a substance to determine if it was marijuana. Honig says Shah recorded an anticipated result without properly conducting the analysis.

Shah worked in the drug unit of the state police's North Regional Laboratory.

A spokesman for the attorney general's office says Shah hasn't been charged. He wouldn't say whether Shah is under criminal investigation.

One of marijuana legalization’s projected sure things for 2016 was dealt a significant blow earlier this week that could prevent Maine voters from having the opportunity to approve a recreational cannabis industry in the November election.

The Secretary of State’s office in Maine revealed on Wednesday that a proposed ballot initiative aimed at ending prohibition did not have enough valid signatures to be added to the ballot. It seems that while the Campaign to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol (CRMLA) submitted 99,229 signatures in February, the state is claiming that only 51,543 of them can be verified. This puts the initiative 9,580 signatures shy of being able to move on to the next phase of their campaign – a situation that could sabotage the entire effort.

According to the Philly Voice, the Pennsylvania ACLU is planning to appeal a decision made last month by a federal court stating that a citizen has no First Amendment right to record police activity without a specific, critical reason for doing so.

In the Feb. 19 decision, the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania ruled in the case of Fields vs. City of Philadelphia that absent "any state purpose of being critical of the government," your freedom of speech is not applicable when recording the activities of police officers.

As the Philly Voice explained after the ruling, the case was brought by two young plaintiffs, Richard Fields and Amanda Geraci. In 2013, Fields, an undergraduate at Temple University, was recording some 20 police officers outside a house party on campus. Some multiple sclerosis patients use medical marijuana to reduce their pain and muscle spasms, and a Colorado State University researcher is launching a crowdfunding campaign to study possible benefits and side effects of this long-term marijuana use.

The research project will not involve providing cannabis or encouraging its use; it will simply examine existing users who have decided to treat their MS symptoms with medical marijuana and voluntarily agree to participate in the study.

Thorsten Rudroff, director of CSU’s Integrative Neurophysiology Lab, said local clinicians estimate that up to 50 percent of their patients are using marijuana to alleviate their symptoms.

“Marijuana use may have additional benefits, such as improving motor function, but this is all based on anecdotal evidence,” Rudroff said. “We don’t have scientific evidence that this is working, so we think this research could provide valuable information.”
