Germany is entering a new age of regulated medical cannabis. German health insurance providers will be forced to cover medical cannabis treatment for those with a prescription, and by 2019, medical cannabis must be processed and provided to cover prescription cannabis. Those with non-life-threatening illnesses will now be able to receive access to medical cannabis. The new industry will begin issuing licenses this month.

 

The cannabis agency affiliated with the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM) is currently looking for bids from aspiring medical cannabis suppliers. BfArM has tasked three people with regulating the cultivation and processing of cannabis and the agency also will conduct quality control. About 500 German citizens have already received exceptional authorization to grow personal amounts of cannabis at home. Others import medical cannabis from the Netherlands or Canada. The BfArM estimates that Germany would need 365 kilograms of cannabis, or 10,000 plants, to supply every patient with a ration of one gram of cannabis per day.

Hemp research is beginning to thrive in upstate New York. Marc P. Privitera owns PreProcess Inc. and is a chemical engineer who specializes in hemp growth. Privitera was issued a permit on April 18 to research industrial hemp processing, manufacturing and marketing through New York’s Industrial Hemp Agricultural Research Pilot Program. Privitera was one of six companies that was issued a permit.

 

Privitera plans on planting hemp seeds in June and using hemp grain to make “hempcrete,” paper and textiles. He owns four one-acre plots in Ellisburg, Copenhagen, Binghamton and Cobleskill. Each of his four one-acre plots could generate up to 700 pounds of hemp grain and 5,800 pounds of hemp stalk.

On April 20, the DCMJ, an advocacy group that sponsored Initiative 71, held the 1st Annual Joint Session in Washington D.C. and gave out two free pre-rolls to members of Congress, Congressional staffers, journalists, support staff, interns and Capitol Hill workers 21-or-older with valid Congressional identification. However during the event, at least seven individuals were arrested while legally giving out pre-rolls to adults.

On Monday, the Iowa State Senate passed an expanded medical marijuana proposal by a landslide. The vote was 45 “yes” to 5 “no”. This expansion would allow making and dispensing cannabis products in Iowa legal, as well as for adults to legally possess and use cannabis under a doctor’s care to treat an variety of medical conditions. The proposal is entitled “The Compassionate Use of Cannabis Act,” and, if it passes through the rest of the State’s Congress, would become a new law that would replace Iowa’s existing but limited cannabis oil statute.

 

This expansion could have great potential for cannabis policy reform overall, with Iowa being right in the middle of America’s heartland.

How did 420 Start? Where did the term 420 come from? It is a question many of us have asked, usually around 4:20am (if it was a late night), or 4:20pm (if you’re night is just getting started). But, for me, 420 just means smoke em because you can.

 

The term 420 suggests that there are a couple times in one day that one could choose to partake with cannabis, It’s a time where drug law reform advocates demand the right, liberty and freedom for people to imbibe with cannabis on whatever terms they choose. Whether it be for medical use, at the end of a long day, or to rock out to ones favorite Dead show, we have adopted 420 as the time to overtly express our freedom to ingest cannabis, a plant far safer than alcohol and most over the counter and prescription drugs.

 

Of course, there is a real story behind 420, and Ryan Grim told us all about it in a great piece he wrote for the Huffington Post in May of 2009. It involves one of the most well known names in cannabis news, Steve Bloom, who owns and writes for Freedom Leaf.

It’s not uncommon for cannabis users to feeling enlightened or creative and when the effects of the plant begin to kick in, beautiful works of art are born. This act has always inspired countless consumers to express themselves, and now there’s an outlet for such talent and creativity. The High Art Contest, hosted by the Natural Cannabis Company and co-sponsored by famous lowbrow, alternative art magazine, Juxtapoz, is bringing back its fourth annual High Art contest to celebrate cannabis-themed artwork from all over the world.

Legalize Medical Cannabis“We’ve got a monumental day,” declared West Virginia Governor Jim Justice as he signed Senate Bill 386—affectionately named the Medical Cannabis Act—into law, making West Virginia the 29th state to officially legalize the use of medical cannabis.

 

The Medical Cannabis Act will allow doctors to prescribe medical cannabis to patients suffering from 16 conditions including seizures, cancer, PTSD, AIDS, Parkinson’s disease and more. After obtaining permission from their doctor, patients can then apply for their medical cannabis card with approval from the Board of Public Health.
