Company Claims To Offer The ??First Kosher Certified Medical Marijuana??

I am not Jewish, but I have quite a few friends that are. I always like learning more about Jewish culture and traditions. Admittedly, there is a ton more that I need to learn. I’m semi-familiar with kosher requirements, but again, there’s a lot I don’t know. Recently a company announced that it is the first to certify its medical marijuana products as kosher. Per NBC News:
A New York company says it will soon offer the first certified kosher medical pot.
Vireo Health says its non-smokable medical cannabis products have been certified as conforming to the Jewish dietary law by the Orthodox Union.
Vireo says it’s the first time a medical cannabis product has been deemed kosher............http://www.theweedblog.com/company-claims-to-offer-the-first-kosher-certified-medical-marijuana/

Oregon Marijuana Community Fundraiser For Senator Ron Wyden Set For February 18th

Last year the Oregon cannabis community held a fundraiser for United States Representative Earl Blumenauer which raised over $160,000. That’s more than the national cannabis community raised at a national industry event for Presidential candidate Rand Paul. It’s just one of many examples of how awesome the Oregon cannabis community can be. The Oregon cannabis community is back at it again, this time in the form of a fundraiser for Oregon Senator Ron Wyden.
Ron Wyden has not always been a strong supporter of marijuana reform, but he has fought a lot for it in recent years, and deserves the cannabis community’s support. The event is being organized by Amy Margolis, along with a handful of Oregon cannabis companies. Amy wears many hats, and while I have never met her before, I am a fan of all of her advocacy work. Below is more about the event, via the event’s Eventbrite page. I would love to see a large turnout for this...........http://www.theweedblog.com/oregon-marijuana-fundraiser-senator-ron-wyden-february-18th/
What Was Your Favorite Marijuana Moment From 2015?

The end of 2015 is drawing near, and it’s time to start reflecting back on the year that was. 2015 was a big year for marijuana, especially in Oregon where I live. Marijuana legalization took effect in July, and limited recreational sales began on October 1. Almost everyone I know in Oregon that has a suitable location is growing marijuana now. It’s been an amazing year.
There were a lot of victories in the marijuana world in 2015, despite what Kevin Sabet tried to say in his recent reefer madness puff piece on the Huffington Post. I won’t link to it because it makes my head hurt every time I see the article. Google it, it’s not hard to find. My favorite marijuana moment, and...........http://www.theweedblog.com/what-was-your-favorite-marijuana-moment-from-2015/

Michigan Legislature Gags Local Officials On Ballot Proposals

Kathleen Gray of the Detroit Free Press has uncovered a potentially earth-shattering story from the Michigan legislature. Lawmakers have passed a measure that bans using public funds or resources to educate the public on any proposal appearing on a ballot within 60 days of the election; SB 0571 was approved by both the House and Senate in some late-night legislative wrangling before lawmakers skipped out of town for Christmas break. It was presented to the Governor for his signature at 10:52 on December 28.
This story of ambush is all-too-familiar to Michigan’s civil rights organizations: This was ”the final bill passed before the legislature adjourned… started out as a fairly innocuous campaign finance bill… was totally changed at the last minute in the House…that provision was added without any public hearings or.......

Sean Parker, creator of Napster and early investor in Facebook, is giving the California Marijuana Policy Project (MPP) an early Christmas present.
The generous tech billionaire and philanthropist recently announced he will match all donations to MPP, dollar-for-dollar, up to any amount, reported SFGate.
“We’re very excited about the generosity he’s shown,” Mason Tvert, MPP Communications Director, said. “This is someone who wants to see marijuana prohibition end and helped bring a lot of folks together, and now he’s putting his money where his mouth is.”
This is the latest in a series of Parker’s philanthropic acts, which include donations to cancer, diabetes and.......http://www.hightimes.com/read/california%E2%80%99s-legalization-movement-gets-generous-donation

Obama Tells Supreme Court to Ignore Lawsuit Against Colorado Marijuana

The Obama Administration came to the defense of legal marijuana states on Wednesday by advising the U.S. Supreme Court not to waste any time entertaining a lawsuit conjured up by Oklahoma and Nebraska over their seething disdain for Colorado’s recreational cannabis trade.
A brief filed by the Justice Department’s leading legal eagle, U.S. Solicitor General Donald Verrilli Jr., is a finely penned tune of persuasion intended to get the nation’s highest court to reject the lawsuit disputing Colorado’s decision to legalize marijuana. The document suggests the U.S. Supreme Court is not the proper venue for this grievance.
“The motion for leave to file a bill of complaint should be denied because this is not an appropriate case for the exercise of this Court’s original jurisdiction,” Verrilli wrote. “Entertaining the type of dispute at issue here — essentially that one State’s laws make it more likely that third parties will violate federal and state law in another State — would represent a substantial and unwarranted expansion of this Court’s original jurisdiction.”
It was around this time last year when Oklahoma and Nebraska formed an alliance in an attempt to........http://www.hightimes.com/read/obama-tells-supreme-court-ignore-lawsuit-against-colorado-marijuana

Understanding Washington??s New Emergency Rules

he Washington Department of Health (DOH) recently issued emergency medical cannabis rules. These rules were promulgated as part of the Medical Cannabis Patient Protection Act, which brings medical cannabis under the authority of the Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board (LCB) and DOH beginning on July 1, 2016. The DOH appears to have adopted a broad interpretation of what the term “medical marijuana” means. Essentially, it’s going to be patient’s choice when it comes to what “medical grade” cannabis is.
“At this time, the decision of what marijuana products may be beneficial is best made by patients in consultation with their........ ireadculture.com/understanding-washingtons-new-emergency-rules/

Updates in the Big Apple Medical Cannabis Regulations in New York

n 2014, New York’s governor, Andrew Cuomo, signed the Compassionate Care Act after various revisions were made to prohibit smoking cannabis and decreasing the amount of eligible illnesses, making New York the 23rd state to legalize medical cannabis. Since then, many patients and advocates have been worried about the restrictive guidelines of the bill.
The Compassionate Care Act requires that patients diagnosed with a severely debilitating or life-threatening illness to pay a $50 fee to apply with the Department of Health (DOH), and must provide both their personal information as well as a doctor’s certification. If approved for a registry card, the card will only be valid for one year for patients who do not have a life-threatening illness, and for those who have a terminal illness, the card will be valid until death.
Although these guidelines seem simple enough, what makes the bill so restrictive is the fact that only 10 illnesses are currently covered by the bill, while only five organizations are allowed to............ http://ireadculture.com/updates-in-the-big-apple/

Kentucky Senator Pushes For Marijuana Legalization

Kentucky Senator Perry Clark has been pushing for marijuana reform in Kentucky for awhile now. I did a quick search of the articles I’ve posted over the years, and Perry Clark’s name came up quite a bit. Senator Clark pushed for medical marijuana in 2013, and again in 2014. Those efforts didn’t gain enough traction to pass, but they definitely continued the conversation about marijuana reform in Kentucky. This year Senator Clark is pushing for full legalization via a bill (Cannabis Freedom Act) that he introduced late last week. Below are highlights of the bill, via the State-Journal:
The “Cannabis Freedom Act” would end the prohibition on marijuana cultivation, possession and selling the substance in regulatory framework similar to Colorado.
Quick takeaways on the act include: it would only be available to residents 21 and over;
• residents could possess up to 1 ounce on their person;
•cultivate up to 5 plants;
• store an excess of cultivated cannabis for personal use where it was cultivated or transfer 1 ounce to another person 21 or older without remuneration.
• persons under 21 could possess cannabis if it was recommended by a licensed physician;
• no smoking cannabis in public places
I can’t help but think of the late great Gatewood Galbraith whenever I hear of marijuana reform efforts in Kentucky. Gatewood fought for a very long time to reform Kentucky’s marijuana laws, and it makes me smile to see Senator Clark continue that effort. If you live in Kentucky, make sure to contact your elected officials and.........http://www.theweedblog.com/kentucky-senator-pushes-for-marijuana-legalization/

Uruguay To Sell Three Different Strains Of Marijuana At Pharmacies Next Year

Uruguay voted to legalize marijuana in 2013. They were the first country in the world to do so. There were almost instantly reports that there would be grams for as low as one dollar in Uruguay, and that sales would occur very quickly. Time has shown that launching legal sales in Uruguay has taken longer than expected. But, there seems to be movement, as earlier this month Uruguay announced that there will be three strains of marijuana sold at pharmacies starting next year. Via Reuters:
Uruguayans will be able to choose from three varieties of state-sanctioned cannabis when marijuana starts being sold in pharmacies in the small South American country next year, the National Drug Board said Saturday.
Each variety will have different levels of the mind-altering compound tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD), believed to soften the impacts of THC, said the board’s president, Milton Romani.
“There will be three options with indications about the effects of each that point beginners toward starting with the lowest level” of THC, Romani told Reuters on the sidelines of the marijuana forum Expocannabis 2015.
Romani declined to specify the names of the three varieties.
It sounds like there will be one high CBD strain, one low level THC strain, and a higher THC strain. That’s not as much variety as one would hope, but it’s certainly workable. I’m curious to see exactly how much it costs per gram, and what the quality is........http://www.theweedblog.com/uruguay-to-sell-three-different-strains-of-marijuana-at-pharmacies-next-year/

I like to go on ‘toking adventures.’ Toking adventures are when I go on a walk, hike, or some type of mission with the adventure culminating in a well planned out consumption session. Most of the time I hang out around my house and consume marijuana, or at a friend or family member’s house. But sometimes I need a change of pace and scenery, so I pack up my gear and go out looking for something to do and somewhere new to puff.
I am always presented with a dilemma in these scenarios. I don’t want to bring too much gear, or too bulky of a smoking device because I’m going to have to take that thing with me everywhere I go. A terminally ill woman who successfully sued the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services to obtain the state’s first medical marijuana patient ID card will visit a medical marijuana dispensary in Portland, Maine on Friday.
Linda Horan of Alstead, who suffers from Stage 4 lung cancer, will hold a media availability outside of Wellness Connection of Maine at 1 p.m. ET, where she will be accompanied by New Hamsphire State Rep. Renny Cushing and several of her supporters. Members of the media are asked to respect the privacy of other patients who might be visiting the dispensary.
“I feel better already, knowing that I will not have to spend my final days in a narcotic stupor,” Horan said. “I look forward to visiting the dispensary, learning about which products would be best for treating my symptoms. I will finally receive the..........

I received the following e-mail out of Florida while I was at work. If you live in Florida, make sure to provide your signature to the campaign, and tell everyone else that you know to do the same:
The Florida Supreme Court has put it’s stamp of approval on the 2016 version of the medial marijuana petition, paving the way towards it’s imminent placement on the ballot.
This leaves the final step prior to getting on the ballot: to secure 683,149 validated petitions. As of this email, we have over 400,000 validated and only weeks left to collect and send in the remainder.
Please contribute anything........... http://www.theweedblog.com/2016-medical-marijuana-petition-approved-by-florida-supreme-court/

Over half of all people admitted to drug treatment programs for marijuana-related issues over the past decade were referred there by a criminal justice source, according to a report published this month by the US Department of Health and Human Services.
In the years 2003 through 2013, 52 percent of people in drug treatment for marijuana as their ‘primary substance of abuse’ were referred by the criminal justice system. Of those, almost half (44 percent) entered treatment as a component of their probation or parole.
Only 18 percent of marijuana treatment admissions were based upon self-referrals. Primary marijuana admissions were less likely than all other drug-related admissions combined to have been self- or individually referred to treatment.
The data mirrors those of previous federal reports finding that only a small percentage of those entering treatment for marijuana perceive that they are.............http://www.theweedblog.com/criminal-justice-referrals-still-driving-marijuana-treatment-admissions/
