A majority of registered Maryland voters believe that cannabis use should be legally regulated in a manner similar to alcohol, according to statewide polling data provided by Gonzalez Research & Marketing Strategies and commission by the Marijuana Policy Project.

Fifty-three percent of respondents said that they favor a change in state law “to allow marijuana to be regulated and taxed similarly to alcohol, for legal use by adults 21 years of age and older.” Forty-three percent of those surveyed opposed legalization.

Flint, Michigan has a water crisis. In my hometown, we can't drink our water. Too much lead, too many microbes. On Wednesday James Bell and Tracy Manning participated in a press conference by Sen. Harold Jones II (D-Augusta) to introduce Senate Bill 254 that would remove felony for possession of any amount of marijuana. This is one of 7 bills pending in the Georgia General Assembly. The Maryland House and Senate voted 86-55 and 29-17 Thursday to override Gov. Larry Hogan’s veto of a bill intended to fix the state’s marijuana decriminalization law.

SB 517, introduced by Sen. Bobby Zirkin (D-Baltimore County), removes criminal penalties for possession of marijuana paraphernalia. The measure also imposes a new civil fine of up to $500 on public cannabis consumption. Gov. Hogan vetoed the bill in May 2015, after it was approved 32-13 in the Senate and 83-53 in the House of Delegates.

Maryland adopted a law in 2014 that was intended to decriminalize simple marijuana possession, but it did not include marijuana paraphernalia.

A new poll released Thursday shows that the majority of Maryland voters support broader cannabis policy reform. I am the biggest fan of former NBA player Cliff Robinson. I’m sure there are others that will make that same claim, especially in Oregon, but I personally feel I win that fan competition. I first met Cliff Robinson at the Oregon State Fair in the early 90’s. A chill wind is blowing in the Windy City and it’s not a wintery blast from Lake Michigan. It’s the cold freeze of an industry without any customers.

In New York, the strict rules for qualification into the program have inhibited participation, too.

From December 23rd until January 7th, the New York program approved only 53 patients for the program. By January 16th it was up to 165.

There are eight dispensaries open across the entire state.

Although the inception of any program involves a gradual increase in participation, this is far more gradual than expected, prompting the Associated Press to declare the program’s launch a “Slow start”.

The problem with the New York program includes the limited types of the marijuana medicines they allow (non-smoked forms only), the nature of the illnesses that would qualify one for participation (far fewer than other states), and the degree of complexity in the patient certification process (stiff requirements).

We all know that one friend or family member that is very stubborn about their stance against medical marijuana. States that have legalized pot are taking a fresh look at making it easier for out-of-state investors to get in the weed business, saying the industry's ongoing difficulty in banking means they need new options to finance expansion.

The four states that allow recreational pot sales - Alaska, Colorado, Oregon and Washington - have another big reason to take a new look at pot investment. That's California, the nation's most populous state and largest marijuana producer, though it allows the drug only for people with certain medical ailments.

An Open Letter to True Legalizers™

All across the Internet, I often find myself in comments battles with you. We’re not so different, you and I. I smoke pot every day and want to see it legalized across the country. I have friends with medical needs that would be alleviated by cannabis. I have other friends who’ve been busted and served time for marijuana law violations. We have a lot in common.

Where we butt heads is over how we get legalization nationwide. I’m of the opinion that winning the War on Drugs will take many battles where we take whatever ground we can take, defend it, and move on to take more ground. I believe that the war requires both generals and privates and a whole lot of funding.

You, on the other hand, are a True Legalizer™. You seem to think the War on Drugs can be ended in one fell swoop with nothing but an unfunded volunteer militia. Then you set your militia up to fight the professional army on your side rather than the enemy’s army that still wants to imprison you.

Your efforts usually take the form of an all-volunteer grassroots effort to get what you consider True Legalization™ on the ballot. If your all-volunteer grassroots efforts succeed, it would be one of the few times in history such an effort has succeeded in legalizing anything, much less marijuana.
