Earl Blumenauer And Barney Frank To Be Honored In Portland On Sunday

earl blumenauer marijuana garden fundraiser

I was lucky enough to meet Congressman Earl Blumenauer (D-OR) late last year at an event hosted by the National Cannabis Industry Association (NCIA). I have admired Mr. Blumenauer since well before I co-founded this blog in 2010. He is absolutely a champion of justice in my book. Just this week Earl Blumenauer was part of a group of Oregon congressional members that co-introduced legislation that would allow publications featuring marijuana ads to be delivered via U.S. mail.

There is going to be an event this Sunday in Portland, Oregon to honor not only Earl Blumenauer, but also to honor long time drug reform supporter and former Congressman Barney Frank. Barney Frank was a pioneer in Congress when it comes to drug reform. Mr. Frank supported cannabis reform way, way before it was fashionable. There are a lot of elected officials that are..................http://www.theweedblog.com/earl-blumenauer-and-barney-frank-to-be-honored-in-portland-on-sunday/

Does Presidential Candidate Ted Cruz Support Marijuana Reform?

Posted on February 5, 2016 at 10:40 AM Comments comments (0)

ted cruz marijuana

The 2016 Presidential race went into full swing on Monday with the Iowa Caucuses taking place. On the Democrat side, Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton essentially tied, and O’Malley did so poorly that he dropped out of the race after the results were announced. On the GOP side, which has many more candidates, Ted Cruz came out on top, with Donald Trump taking second place in Iowa, and Marco Rubio rounding out the top three.

Ted Cruz pulled off somewhat of an upset by winning in Iowa, and has changed the conversation as far as who is considered to be the front-runner on the GOP side to get the party’s nomination. Of course, there has only been one state that has voted so far, and there’s still a lot of primaries to go, but Ted Cruz’s victory was impressive enough................. http://www.theweedblog.com/does-presidential-candidate-ted-cruz-support-marijuana-reform/

Not So Shocking News ?? Missouri Sheriffs Oppose Medical Marijuana

missouri marijuana decriminalization hb 512 testimony

For some reason when it comes to marijuana reform, members of law enforcement almost always lead the charge for the opposition. Members of law enforcement will be quick to say that they ‘don’t make the laws, they just enforce them,’ yet law enforcement is constantly present at public hearings and events to voice their opposition to proposed marijuana law changes. I have seen it happen in almost every state that has had a reform effort that was gaining traction.

Members of law enforcement will say that they oppose marijuana because it’s a gateway drug, which is a theory that has been debunked so many times I’ve lost count. The cops will say that they want to prevent public safety nightmares like an epidemic of...............http://www.theweedblog.com/not-so-shocking-news-missouri-sheriffs-oppose-medical-marijuana/

Michigan Marijuana Legalization Initiative Is Close To Signature Goal

Posted on February 4, 2016 at 10:55 AM Comments comments (0)

michigan marijuana legalization milegalize

The MILegalize Board of Directors is pleased to announce that the campaign has collected over 240,000 signatures to legalize cannabis the right way in Michigan. The campaign is issuing a final challenge to their volunteer base– help us collect another 50,000 signatures to finish the petition drive.

Since the campaign began in June of 2015, MILegalize has collected over 240,000 total voter signatures on petitions statewide; the state requires 252,000 valid signatures at time of turn-in to qualify for the November 2016 general election ballot.

“MILegalize has always set a goal of overachieving the target number of signatures needed,” said MILegalize Chairman, Lansing attorney Jeffrey Hank. “Besides our heroic activists, we have established contracts with two professional signature gathering firms to collect another 100,000 valid signatures from voters before the end of our drive. It’s exciting. This spring offensive is the beginning of the end of cannabis prohibition in Michigan.”

MILegalize needs another 50,000 raw signatures submitted by volunteer petitioners before March 15. The MILegalize campaign is setting new standards for voter validation, registration and data analysis, creating a challenge-proof petition and laying the groundwork early for the November campaign.

“Our volunteer army has kept us in the campaign,” Campaign Manager Chris Silva said. The people of Michigan responded. They know why we can’t wait.”

The final challenge issued by the Board to the MILegalize volunteers; collect the 50,000 raw signatures needed to complete the campaign. “MILegalize is paying $2 per valid signature to our volunteers, if they register with...........http://www.theweedblog.com/michigan-marijuana-legalization-initiative-is-close-to-signature-goal/

Detroit Puts 211 Medical Marijuana Dispensaries On Notice

detroit marijuana

As early as this morning, medical marijuana dispensaries in Detroit will be opening envelopes containing letters from the City of Detroit regarding the city’s new registration process- and a reminder that most of them will not be in operation for very much longer.

The letter was referenced in a Powerpoint presentation created by three different divisions of government and delivered to City Council during a meeting Tuesday morning. The presentation, titled “Medical Marihuana Caregiver Center Application Process Status Report For Detroit City Council,” identifies 211 dispensary locations in the city and includes a map.

The status report also says, “Notice letters sent to all facilities on February 2, 2016, published in the Detroit Legal News and posted on the MMCC website.”

As of this writing, the letter is not easily located on any of the websites the city has created for............ http://www.theweedblog.com/detroit-puts-211-medical-marijuana-dispensaries-on-notice/

ICBC Is A Stand-Out Cannabis Event Among A Sea Of Conferences

international cannabis business conference san francisco 2016

It seems that everywhere you turn these days there is a another cannabis conference popping up. They seem to be a trend, as of late. One thing we all know about trends is that they don’t last. The International Cannabis Business Conference (ICBC) was one of the first on the scene and is unique in many regards. First, even though it is a business conference, it feels a lot like a rally for cannabis reform. It is somewhere in between a high-end business conference and a progressive-thinking drug policy conference.

Secondly, the speakers at the ICBC are bar-none the best line-up of any cannabis conference in the nation. The speakers are more on par with the types of folks one might see at a big-time tech-conference. Marijuana Jobs Report For January 2016

It’s the start of a new month, which means that there’s a new marijuana jobs report for the previous month. THC University puts out this jobs video each month, and I always like to see which states are adding new jobs, and at what rate. Everyone and their grandma right now wants to get a job in the industry, and I can’t blame them. It’s a great time to start a cannabis career! Governor Jerry Brown has signed AB 21, an urgency measure introduced by Rep. Jim Wood that repeals a March 1 deadline in the new state medical marijuana law that some have interpreted as requiring local jurisdictions to ban or regulate medical marijuana cultivation, or lose their licensing authority.

Now that the March 1 deadline is repealed, Cal NORML is calling for all jurisdictions that are considering banning medical marijuana activities to instead table the issue, and for all cities and counties to work towards land use regulations to protect patients rights, as well as public safety and the environment. ”Driving marijuana cultivation and delivery back underground will only lead to crime and......http://www.theweedblog.com/california-governor-signs-bill-to-end-medical-marijuana-deadline/

NORML’s 2016 Congressional Lobby Day at the United States Capitol is scheduled for May 23rd and 24th. Hundreds of marijuana consumers, activists, patients and business owners are expected to attend a day-long training and informational conference on Monday and re-convene on The Hill Tuesday to personally lobby their elected members of the House of Representatives and Senate.

Former Surgeon General: ??Stop Using Our Poor to Subsidize Private Prison Industries??

joycelyn elders international cannabis business conference

Former Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders was ahead of her time in many ways. The first African American to hold the post, she was only the 2nd woman as well. Like any great pioneer, she hasn’t been afraid to speak her mind on a whole host of issues, from marijuana to masturbation. Working under the Bill Clinton Administration, Dr. Elders proposed that the United States study the possibility of ending prohibition all the way back in 1993. Elders didn’t receive support from the administration and eventually resigned after taking flak for recommending that masturbation should be taught as part of a healthy sex education.

In 2010, Dr. Elders endorsed California’s Proposition 19 cannabis legalization measure. While the effort didn’t win at the ballot box, it did help change the national debate, benefiting the successful campaigns in Washington in Colorado two years later. On February 13th, Dr. Elders will be returning to California to speak about the need to legalize and.............http://www.theweedblog.com/former-surgeon-general-stop-using-our-poor-to-subsidize-private-prison-industries/

Oregon Recreational Marijuana License "Temporary Rules and Application Process" Video

I came across this video from the Oregon Liquor Control Commission (OLCC) via the Cannabis Collaborative Conference’s website and felt it was worth passing along. I know there are a lot of people getting their rec apps in order in Oregon, and even if you aren’t, it’s still an interesting video to watch. Permanent rules are being worked out right now, and this video covers the temporary rules that will be in place until full implementation of Oregon Measure 91 takes effect, as well as the application process. The video is............http://www.theweedblog.com/oregon-recreational-marijuana-license-temporary-rules-and-application-process-video/

One of the state’s most active marijuana specialist lawyers has been honored by the Criminal Defense Attorneys of Michigan (CDAM) with their “Justice For All” Award.

Southfield attorney Michael Komorn was announced as recipient of the honor this week. Of the thousands of criminal defense attorneys in the state, Komorn’s record of going after the big guy- and winning- propelled him into the top spot. The award is described by CDAM in this way: “The Justice for All award is given to recognize a particular extraordinary contribution of a group of individuals. This contribution can be in the form of legal representation or other extraordinary service.”

Most recently Komorn won a dismissal of charges in the Max Lorincz case, which involved a prosecution and removal of a child from a loving home based on a tiny smear of purportedly marijuana concentrate discovered by law enforcement. This case, and Komorn Law’s digging into the........... http://www.theweedblog.com/komorn-awarded-highest-honor-for-michigan-criminal-defense-attorneys/

Michigan Marijuana Program Participation Among Top In United States

Posted on February 4, 2016 at 10:25 AM Comments comments (0)

michigan marijuana

Marijuana Business Daily produces a chart every week detailing an aspect of marijuana law reform in America; their latest puts Michigan among the top medical marijuana programs in the country, based on per capita participation.

Michigan ranks fourth among the top five states with the greatest participation in their medical programs. The data is prepared on a per capita basis, which equalizes all states in the assessment regardless of population size.

The top participating state is California, with 29.3 medical marijuana patients per 1,000 adult residents. Colorado’s program ranks second with 25.7 participants, followed by Oregon (24.6), Michigan (23.2) and Washington State (20.3).

Noted by report author Becky Olsen, not all states require registration of patients. Both California and Washington State’s patient numbers are approximated for this reason, as are several others. “Estimates for patient counts are developed based on similar markets,” Olsen writes.

View the graphic at the Marijuana Business Daily’s website.

Olsen’s analysis of the reasoning for participation variances is worth a read. The patient figures used in the graphic include............http://www.theweedblog.com/michigan-marijuana-program-participation-among-top-in-united-states/
