Jeff Sessions Remains Vague on Marijuana Legality in His Confirmation Hearings

During Tuesday’s marathon confirmation hearings for Attorney General, when marijuana came into the spotlight after six hours, Jeff Sessions failed to give a straight answer on how the Justice Department would respond to states with legalized medical and recreational marijuana.

Although Sessions, the staunchly anti-weed senator from Alabama, appeared to suggest there would not be radical changes in federal policy toward weed, he also left the door open for increased federal interference in states rights.

Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT) asked Sessions if he would use federal resources to prosecute sick people using marijuana in accordance with state law, even though it might violate federal law.

Sessions, who told USA Today last April, “Good people don’t smoke marijuana,” acknowledged that the federal government has limited enforcement resources.

Mississippi Lawmaker Introduces Bill to Legalize Medical Cannabis

Legislation that would legalize the medical use, possession and distribution of cannabis for medical purposes has been filed in Mississippi.

State Representative Joel Bomgar (R-Madison) has filed House Bill 179, which would make it so that “qualifying patient who possesses a valid registry identification card” are not “subject to arrest, prosecution, or penalty in any manner.”

Under the proposed law, those with a qualifying condition who receive a recommendation from a physician will be legally allowed to possess and use cannabis and cannabis products for medical purposes. Patients would also be allowed to possess up to 2.5 ounces at any given time.

Geriatric Opioid Use: The Silent Addiction Problem

Senior citizens have an opioid addiction problem and, like any other, it’s not a pretty sight.

According to a report from the Office of Inspector General, 30 percent of our country’s 55 million Medicare patients are taking at least one commonly abused opioid.

The report found an “astounding” number of opioids prescribed to the elderly.

Micah Sobota, a clinical pharmacist at Coleman Behavioral Health in Ohio, is one of many clinicians wrestling with opioid-related challenges in seniors.

Whether it’s aging physiology that renders them more sensitive to the medications, or outright dependence, these patients present unique management challenges, said Sobota at the annual meeting of the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists (ASCP).

FDA Gives Big Pharma Partial Green Light on �??Abuse Proof�?? Painkiller

While the federal government claims to be scheming up a master plan to combat the opioid epidemic currently turning the United States population into a junkie nation, its leading health agency is allowing Big Pharma to capitalize on the illusion of safe painkillers.

It was revealed earlier this week that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Egalet Corp’s new time-release opioid, known as Arymo ER and will permit the company to market the drug as an abuse proof medication because it cannot be dissolved and injected. However, the FDA stopped short of giving the company the green light to market its latest concoction as a deterrent for abuse with respect to those people who might chew or snort the drug.

Company officials say the goal of this medication is to provide people with a safer option when it comes to the use of painkillers.

DEA Under Fire for Wasting Money and Being Incompetent

The DEA’s failed War on Drugs is among numerous reasons why the inefficient, money-wasting, disoriented organization should cease to exist and stop wasting our tax dollars.

A recent round of criticism prompted some lawmakers to complain that the agency’s weed eradication program is squandering millions of dollars in states where pot is legal.

Adding ignorance and corruption to the DEA’s list of dubious qualities, let us not forget the former DEA chief who stepped down after a huge sex scandal. She was then followed by acting DEA chief Chuck Rosenberg who embarrassed himself and everyone listening when he told reporters that marijuana was “probably not” as dangerous as heroin, adding, “I’m not an expert,” then proceeded to call medical marijuana “a joke.”

At least Rosenberg admitted he’s not an expert, but how did he get the job?

The existing United Nations (UN) regime against cannabis and other drugs is no longer relevant in today’s society. Last April, the United Nations held a special session that reviewed international cannabis policy. It would be the first time since 1998 that the three-day United Nations General Assembly Special Session (UNGASS) on drug policy took place.

The UNGASS 2016 session in Vienna closed with cannabis still being prohibited by international treaties that govern sovereign nations around the globe. Cannabis Sales were Up 30 Percent in 2016

No matter what your opinion on cannabis is, there is one thing that is undeniable, cannabis is big business. So big in fact that some experts are comparing it to the dot-com boom from earlier this century.

After last November’s historic election, 29 states and the District of Columbia have passed laws legalizing cannabis in some capacity. On top of that, eight states have legalized cannabis on a recreational level. And with new consumers, comes increased profits. Industry experts estimate cannabis sales in 2016 amounted to $6.7 billion, a 30 percent increase, and they expect it to reach as high as $20.2 billion by 2021.

The financial information comes from Arcview, who’s Editor-in-Chief said, “the only consumer industry categories I’ve seen reach $5 billion in annual spending and then post anything like 25 percent compound annual growth in the next five years are cable television (19 percent) in the 1990s and the broadband internet (29 percent) in the 2000s.”

Three Medical Cannabis Cultivation Licenses Awarded in Rhode Island

Three companies have officially been awarded medical cannabis cultivation licenses in Rhode Island. The companies, Medici Products & Solutions, Inc., OSCC, LLC, and Evergreen Gardens, LLC. are currently the only cultivators that are allowed to sell cannabis to the state’s three existing dispensaries.

According to the Providence Journal, Evergreen Gardens was given a license that specifically forbids the company to sell to the Summit Medical Compassion Center. Over 85,000 People Sign Petition Calling on DEA to Stop Lying About Medical Cannabis

In less than a month, a Change.org petition calling on the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to stop lying about medical cannabis has received over 85,000 signatures. The petition was started by Americans for Safe Access (ASA), a nonprofit organization working to increase access to medical cannabis across the United States.

The petition was a response to a recent internal DEA code clarification that gave CBD it’s own tracking code. A switch that threw the legal marijuana industry into a frenzy over what the legal ramifications of the new code means.
