The cannabis community knows that the industry is rising, and now there’s evidence to prove it. Two recent reports studying the demographics and choices of cannabis consumers have exhibited the growing market, while showing the benefits and profitability of medical cannabis for the medical industry. Legalization is proving to be profitable for many states, bringing tax revenue and new industry, with markets like California projecting to have a cannabis market worth $6 billion by 2020.

The first study was conducted by BDS Analytics in Boulder, Colorado, which looked closely at cannabis consumers in Colorado and California. The study tracked recreational and medical cannabis use in adults, and found that most cannabis consumers use cannabis as part of a healthy lifestyle. With all of the state legislatures being in session and the current state of momentum in the cannabis policy reform movement, it is no surprise that many states are seeing marijuana bills and other proposals come through for consideration. The State of Vermont is no exception.

Just recently, the Vermont Senate voted 21-9 in favor of a bill that would legalize marijuana for adults in the State and would create a regulatory agency on the production and sale of marijuana. This is not surprising, considering the recent news from New Hampshire and the other New England States that legalized recreational/adult-use cannabis laws this past election cycle.

On April 23, 22 people were arrested at a cannabis celebration in Philadelphia. On April 24, Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney announced that he believes it’s time to legalize cannabis already, calling the incident “overkill.” Time, energy and money are wasted on cannabis prohibition, especially in states that have legalized medical cannabis and are poised to move forward with legalization.

The Philly Smoke Session was organized on social media and held in a warehouse in Frankford, Pennsylvania. By the time the raid was over, three men and 19 women were arrested and police confiscated over 50 bags of cannabis and edibles from attendees. About 175 others left the party without charges. Later it was revealed that police had been planning the raid for two months.

When this one, done by a group of Harvard students called On Harvard Time (OHT), included Harvard Economist Jeffrey Miron, we knew we wanted to share it.
