Under a bill recently approved by the New Mexico State Senate, criminal penalties for possession of small amounts of marijuana would be replaced with a $50 fine. The Senate voted to replace penalties including possible jail time for low-level marijuana possession violations with a purely monetary penalty. This comes on the heals of other proposed legislation regarding cannabis in New Mexico.

If this bill were to pass, possession of a half-ounce or less of marijuana or drug paraphernalia would be handled much like a traffic ticket, with no court appearances unless the fine is challenged. The passage of the bill through the Senate was only challenged by eight Republicans and one Democrat who voted against the bill. The bill proposal has now moved to the New Mexico House of Representatives.

While visiting Seattle for CannaCon 2017, I spent some time with two of my friends from PDX Weed Week, Max Montrose of the Trichome Institute, and Anthony Nitowski, the Dab Doctor. Max was there as both a lecturer and an exhibitor, and his small table was almost always crowded with folks learning about his classes as well as the TAG assessment of cannabis. Anthony, on the other hand, was there as an attendee, to view new ideas and to rekindle acquaintances and friendships throughout the cannabis community. Once we hooked back up Friday afternoon, we caught a bus that shuttled folks back and forth to the parking lot. It was then a relatively short walk (for me, at least) to the party bus, parked along a city street and not on Federal property. It took only a few minutes for the Dab Doctor to setup one of his e-nail dab rigs and for us to begin vaporizing some extracts. The staggering death toll in Mexico’s drug war has outpaced the number of civilian deaths in Iraq and Afghanistan combined.

A new documentary by Spanish journalist David Beriain discloses what and who is behind the brutality that has turned Mexico into one of the most violent places in the world.

Beriain spent several weeks in northwest Mexico filming the inner workings of the Sinaloa Cartel, whose leader Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán’s arrest and recent extradition to the United States has thrown the group—and Mexico—into an even more chaotic spiral of violence.

Authorities in Colorado aren’t waiting to see what moves—if any—Donald Trump’s administration will make to pare back the state’s booming marijuana industry. For now, Colorado is cracking down on itself.

For years, law enforcement throughout the Great Plains region have blamed Colorado for an influx of cannabis and accompanying drug trade-related violence throughout neighboring states. This alleged havoc was one of the chief arguments used by attorneys general in Oklahoma and Nebraska in a (failed) lawsuit to try and convince federal authorities to intervene in the state’s legal cannabis trade.

Though the violence cited by Oklahoma AG Douglas Peterson—and later repeated by U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions—may not exist (which may explain why the Supreme Court refused to give his lawsuit a hearing), the weed certainly does.

As of now, Coloradans can grow more marijuana at home than anyone else in America. Under current Colorado law, medical marijuana patients and their caregivers can grow up to 99 plants in a “residential setting,” no commercial license required. After attending the Cannabis Collaborative Conference in Portland, I hopped onto a BoltBus for the non-stop ride up to Seattle for CannaCon 2017. Just to make the trip an adventure, there was a rockslide outside of Longview, Washington, that closed I-5, so I accepted the responsibility of being our driver’s navigator while we forged an alternate route up Oregon 30, the Columbia River Hwy. It was nearly midnight by the time I checked in at the La Quinta Inn in downtown Seattle.

Friday morning, I took my time walking the 4 miles to Pier 91, where the event was being held, visiting three recreational dispensaries along the way. Each was a bit different but I noticed right away that none of them showed me the flower buds like we do in Oregon. Everything in the Washington dispensaries exists in sealed packaging. Just not what I have come to experience in Oregon.

The CannaCon 2017 convention was huge, spread over two floors with many exhibitors. Of course, since Pier 91 is federal property, there was no cannabis or cannabis products in the venue.
